A major refinery in Norco, Louisiana, U.S., experienced an explosion on May 5, 1988, resulting from a rupture of an elbow in process piping. Property damages were estimated to be 300 million (U.S., 1988) which was the most costly refinery incident up to that time. (The Phillips Incident in Pasadena, Texas, just 17 months later in October, 1989, experienced property damages two-and-a-half times greater.) This Norco incident had enormous effects on worldwide feedstock supplies. [25]... [Pg.120]

Related Calculations. Use this procedure for any pipe in which there is laminar flow of liquid. Table 6.1 gives a quick summary of various ways in which the Reynolds number can be expressed. The symbols in Table 6.1, in the order of their appearance, are D = inside diameter of pipe, ft v = liquid velocity, ft/s p = liquid density, lb/ft3 p. = absolute viscosity of liquid, lb mass/fts d = inside diameter of pipe, in. From a table of pipe properties, d = 22.626 in. Also, k = z/S liquid flow rate, lb/h B = liquid flow rate, bbl/h k = kinematic viscosity of the liquid, Cst q = liquid flow rate, ft3/s Q = liquid flow rate, ft3/min. Use Table 6.1 to find the Reynolds number for any liquid flowing through a pipe. [Pg.176]

The constituents of natural gas should not have deleterious effects on the pipe properties, nor should the gas diffuse through the pipe wall at an excessive rate. Methane and the other hydrocarbons in natural gas, diffuse through polyethylene at a very low rate, that neither causes economic loss, nor dangerous build-up of gas on the outside of the pipe. The maximum daily loss from 1 km of pipe, of 90 mm outer diameter and wall thickness 8.5 mm, pressurised to 1 bar pressure (the partial pressure of methane is 2 bar inside and Obar outside), is 4.41. This is less than 1% of the losses that occur with jointed cast iron pipe, and can be compared with a daily throughput of 2 x 10 1 of gas for a pressure drop of 1 mbar km . ... [Pg.410]
