Pipe dreams

I want to spread the word about the dangers of environmental illness and about how easy it would be to prevent it. It s not a pipe dream. I ve seen it. I want people to know the best of what s happening around the world, and not accept anything less—in terms of environment, health care, human rights and disability rights. 

Whilst trae 3D photonic band gap materials operating in the microwave and millimetre range have been produced, those operating in the visible region of the spectrum are still awaited. When this eventually happens the optical computer will no longer be a pipe dream. 

An obvious implication is that emotion is in the saddle, as Freud assumed, during dreaming, but there is no need now to postulate disguise of the primitive emotions so churned up in REM. We need only integrate them with the conflictual issues of our daily lives to understand their transparent meanings, as in my broken water pipe dream.

Synchronous processes represent the most demonstrative and unique example of chemical reaction ensembles, arranged in time and space. Interest in synchronous chemical reactions is also so much keener, because in biological systems many processes are synchronous. This means that biochemical reactions are arranged and performed in systems with molecular and permolecular structures, which is the chemist s pipe dream . The model for the vanguard party depicted so sharply in What Is to Be Done is an impressive example of executive command and control. I have selected these products in order to show that membrane filtration is an accepted process in the food industry and not just a pipe dream of the future, on which we all based our hopes during the first years of the process. 

Though nothing commercially saleable came of these Home of Tomorrow pipe dreams, the research that was behind them provided a valuable first look at many of the technical problems that will have to be solved if hydrogen is ever to come into wide use as a fuel for the home. Many of these early conclusions are still relevant today. 

But in another way, our wish for control creates a dangerous illusion. In fact, we have no idea what the future holds. We can t ever be sure how our actions will affect our future. Maybe the money we wisely invested will be lost in the stock market, while the silly hobby we took up on impulse turns into a million-dollar career. That doesn t mean we should stop saving money or pursue frivolous pipe dreams. But it does mean that we shouldn t waste time feeling anxious or insufficient, wishing we could control a future that will take its own course.

Dye lasers are the fulfilment of an experimenter s pipe dream that was as old as the laser itself To have a laser that is easily tuneable over a wide range of frequencies or wavelengths (Schafer, 1977). This quotation still has a good degree of validity, although other tuneable laser sources are now challenging the dominance of tuneable dye lasers, which they enjoyed for a number of decades. 

In little over two decades, intelligent sensors have progressed from being a ridiculed academic pipe-dream to an essential component of modern technology, and there is much more to come.
