Pilling mechanism

The key fibre property that determines pill loss is the flex life of the anchor fibres. The higher the flex life, the longer the pill remains on the fabric surface. The specific details of these curves depend on fabric and yam characteristics as well as on the particular mechanical forces acting on the fabric. The pill curves for a knit and a woven fabric made from the same polyester yams are shown in Fig. 11.3. [Pg.131]

The mechanism and the theories of linear oxidation must be discussed with reference to specific examples. This will shortly be done, but it will be helpful to return first of all to the theories of Pilling and Bed worth. [Pg.281]

Since the paper by Pilling and Bedworth in 1923 much has been written about the mechanism and laws of growth of oxides on metals. These studies have greatly assisted the understanding of high-temperature oxidation, and the mathematical rate laws deduced in some cases make possible useful quantitative predictions. With alloy steels the oxide scales have a complex structure chromium steels owe much of their oxidation resistance to the presence of chromium oxide in the inner scale layer. Other elements can act in the same way, but it is their chromium content which in the main establishes the oxidation resistance of most heat-resisting steels. [Pg.1021]

First, you will learn about the human nervous system and how it works when it is healthy. This will include an introduction to the structure (anatomy) of the nervous system and the function (physiology) of the nervous system. Next, we ll describe the things that can go wrong. We ll look at how the system breaks down and malfunctions. Then we ll show you how these breakdowns can result in psychiatric illness. Finally, we ll introduce you to the medications used to treat psychiatric illness. You will learn where these medications work and our best guess of how they work. The presumed mechanism of action of many medications is just that, presumed. In contrast to antibiotics, in which we know quite a lot about the ways that they kill bacteria or stop them from reproducing and how these mechanisms ultimately effect a cure for an infectious disease, less is known about how psychotropic medicines work. Oh, we pretty well understand what psychotropic medicines do when they reach the nerve cell. For example, most of the antidepressants used today block the reuptake of serotonin at the nerve cell, but we re still not sure why blocking serotonin reuptake gradually improves mood in someone with depression. This will lead to a tour, if you will, of what happens to a medication from the time the pill is swallowed, until it exerts its therapeutic effect. [Pg.11]

Pilling-Bedworth ratio of 1 96, anatase phase films can show cracks and fissures with, consequendy, a loss of mechanical stability, however a hydrogen reduction treatment above 600°C leads to phase transition from anatase (101) to rutile (110) [43] with XRD detecting TiH2 upon prolonged hydrogen treatment of titania. As shown in Fig. 4.4, introduction of vanadium increases the intensity of the anatase Ti02 peak above 700°C disappearance of the vanadium (001) peak and the simultaneous appearance of the rutile (110) peak are observed, but anatase continues to dominate even after heat treatment at 800° C. A sharp vanadium (001) peak is observed for heat treatments carried out in air, while no vanadium peak has been seen in the case of heat treatment at 600°C in presence of Ar/H2. [Pg.213]

The power of parental expectations can be seen in the case of a doctor who repeatedly mentioned the necessity of taking his medications. As a physician, he understood the biological mechanisms through which pills affect the human body. As someone with personal experience of depression, he could also describe the pills as lifesavers. Yet with all his knowledge, both medical and personal, he found it hard to put aside his parents antimedication... [Pg.136]

The term induction has evolved to include any mechanism that results in increased tissue concentration of catalytically active protein involved in drug metabolism. This increased enzyme activity results in greater systemic clearance and lower bioavailability of extensively metabolized drugs. The resulting lower drug concentrations often result in therapeutic failure. For example, it is well known that oral contraceptive pills become ineffective when rifampin is coprescribed. [Pg.31]

Since much of the following statistical mechanical analysis follows the outlines developed above for dipole—dipole energy transfer and is similar to electron tunnelling (recently reviewed by Rice and Pilling [39]), the following discussion has been compressed a little. [Pg.91]

Mechanical Properries. Acetate and triacetate have a tenacity in the range of (1.10-0.12 N/tex tl.l-1.4 gl/den 1 with a breaking elongation of about 25-30%. Compared to other common textile libers, acetate and triacetate are relatively weak. e.g.. 20-25 3 the tenacity of polyester. This is not necessarily a disadvantage, because fabric construction can bo used to obtain the desired fabric performance targets. Pilling, the accumulation of fuzz balls on the fabric with wear, is not a problem as It is with the higher tenacity fibers. [Pg.629]
