Physical Considerations in Site

Plants need to be mn by people and the avaHabiUty of employees can constitute the overriding consideration in certain businesses, in relation to siting. Labor-intensive businesses have to either move to a location where labor is available or move their employees to the new plant site, which can be cosdy both from the standpoint of the physical move and also with regard to the additional expense of relocating a family from one place to whoUy new surroundings. Older and less flexible work forces often choose to accept eady retirement, quit, or not to relocate. 

Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) has evolved as a comprehensive approach to project evaluation, in which environmental factors, as well as economic and technical considerations (e.g. Cost Benefit Analysis), are given appropriate consideration in the decisionmaking process. The purpose of an EIA study is to determine the potential environmental, social and health effects of a proposed development. It attempts to define and assess the physical, biological and socio-economic effects, so that logical and rational decisions are made. The identification of possible alternative sites and/or processes may assist in the reduction of potential adverse impacts. 

Use of the classical two-pKn model to describe the local isotherm for proton adsorption on an amphoteric oxide in the presence of an indifferent electrolyte complicates the situation considerably. The two pK values represent, in an artificial way, the amphoteric nature of the oxide (see secs. 4.4. and 4.8.). Equation (77) and (79) have to be extended with a second summation or integration to account for both logK distributions. Only when it is assumed that ApK is the same for all different site types a more simple relation is found. The latter assumption is however rather arbitrary. As there are no physical arguments in favour of using the two-pKn model a good advise is not to use this model. 

Now the time has come to take stock of the activities, study types and test systems which are envisaged to come under GLP. The organisational separation which has taken place has now to be translated into the physical separation of sites, areas, rooms, laboratories, greenhouses or field plots, and the concomitant allocation of the necessary equipment to these GLP sites. The foremost consideration in this respect should not be the organisational ease with which the separation may be pulled through, but the GLP requirement of suitability . For each activity, test system and study type the most suitable places, areas or rooms have to be singled out. Of course, if the maximal suitability concept should yield a distribution of rooms and areas that would be impractical to a large extent, e.g. if the GLP areas were isolated from each other to the extent as to make the daily work a cumbersome, perpetual and...
