The photo-oxidation of n-butane has been modelled by ab initio and DFT computational methods, in which the key role of 1- and 2-butoxyl radicals was confirmed.52 These radicals, formed from the reaction of the corresponding butyl radicals with molecular oxygen, account for the formation of the major oxidation products including hydrocarbons, peroxides, aldehydes, and peroxyaldehydes. In conclusion, the salient features of the light-induced oxidation of polymers are the formation of hydroperoxide, peroxide, and carbonyl groups, the latter in the form of both aldehyde and keto groups. Moreover, certain reactions, such as reaction (d) in Scheme 7.20 and reaction (b) in Scheme 7.21, result in main-chain cleavage as far as the oxidation of linear macromolecules is concerned. Main-chain cleavage leads to a deterioration in certain important mechanical properties. Therefore, the photo-oxidation of polymers is deleterious and should be avoided in commercial polymers. The stabilization of poly(vinyl chloride) against light has been reviewed by Wirth and Andreas. Detailed mechanistic studies have indicated the importance of peroxides in the process of photo-oxidation. It was suggested that protection could be successfully achieved by exclusion of radiation of A < 380 nm. E.s.r. examination of irradiated samples demonstrated the intervention of peroxides in the mechanisms with the ultimate formation of carbonyl groups which caused chain scission by Norrish cleavage. Photo-oxidation of samples of poly(vinyl chloride) modified by incorporation of acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene, methyl methacrylate-butadiene-styrene, and methyl methacrylate-acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymers has been investigated. Discolouration was accelerated by the presence of the modifiers. Thermal pre-treatment accelerated photo-induced decomposition.
