Phosphorus containing organic species

Fluorapatite is the only significant phosphorus-containing mineral in the Earth s crust and schreibersite has been found in iron meteorites. The only organic species to be found containing phosphorus in meteorites are the alkyl phosphonic acids. These are at least promising even if they do not contain the P-O-P phosphoester bond unit. 

The third group is water-immiscible organic species with electron donor or acceptor properties, or solvating carriers. They include carbon-oxygen compounds (amides, ethers, ketones) phosphorus-oxygen compounds (tri- -butylphosphate (TBP), dibutyl-phosphate (DBP) or-phosphonate (DBBP) phosphine oxides (tri- -octylphosphine oxide (TOPO) phosphine sulfides (Cyanex 471) alkyl sulfides (dihexyl, diheptyl sulfides) nitrogen containing compounds (CLX 50), and so on [1-7, 81, 83]. All of them are known as selective extractants, but few of them are tested as carriers in LM processes.

These can be classified as nutrients (basically nitrogen- and phosphorus-containing species such as nitrate, nitrite, orthophosphate, polyphosphate, organic phosphate), toxic species (cyanide), and others (sulfide, sulfate, sulfite). 

GC is coupled with many detectors for the analysis of pesticides in wastewater. At the present time the most popular is GC-MS, which will be discussed in more detail later in this section. The flame ionization detector (FID) is another nonselective detector that identifies compounds containing carbon but does not give specific information on chemical structure (but is often used for quantification because of the linear response and sensitivity). Other detectors are specific and only detect certain species or groups of pesticides. They include electron capture,nitrogen-phosphorus, thermionic specific, and flame photometric detectors. The electron capture detector (ECD) is very sensitive to chlorinated organic pesticides, such as the organochlorine compounds (OCs, DDT, dieldrin, etc.).
