Phosphinic acids are reported as an active catalyst the dicarbamate synthesis from aromatic diamines and diphenyl carbonate (9). 

All the reaction processes were studied in an in situ infrared reactor cell. The product formation profiles were closely monitored. The results of this study show that gas-solid DMC and MPC synthesis processes are significantly more effective than the conventional gas-liquid synthesis processes. The results also show that diphenyl phosphinic acid is an effective catalysts for the synthesis of DMPD from DMC and 2, 4-diaminotoluene. 

Due to the difference in solubility of DMPD, DMC, 2,4- diaminotoluene, diphenyl phosphinic acid in H2O and CCI4, 2,4-diaminotoluene and DMC can be separated from the product reactants/catalyst mixture by extraction with H2O and CCI4, respectively. However, separation of diphenyl phosphinic acid catalyst from DMPD remains a challenging problem. The immobilization of the diphenyl phosphinic acid catalyst on the MCM-41 support is currently underway, aiming at resolving catalyst recovery and product purification problems.
