1-Phenyl-ethane-1,2,2-tris

Poly(pyrido[3,4- ]pyrazine vinylene) 693 has been synthesized via condensation of 3,4-diamino-2,5-dibtomopyridine 691 with l,2-bis[3-(2 -ethylhexyloxy)phenyl]-ethane-l,2-dione 692 followed by coupling with l,2-bis(tri- -butyl-stannyl)ethylene in DMF at 110°C in the presence of tetrakis(triphenylphosphine)palladium. The vinylene polymer 693 showed improved stability toward photooxidation compared with similar polymers with purely aliphatic side chains and also had smaller band gaps (Equation 58) <2002SM(131)53>. 

Many works on the synthesis of cyclic polymers and block copolymers using kinetically controlled ring-expansion polymerizations of cyclic monomers, such as lactones and lactides with various types of cyclic tin initiators, were reviewed by Kricheldorf [147,148]. Kricheldorfs group continued the synthesis of cyclic polymers, and their recent works have focused on the following. Polycondensations of 4,4/-difluorodiphenylsulfone with tris(4-hydroxy phenyl)ethane were performed in DMSO to give multi-cyclic poly(ether sulfone)s derived from tris(4-hydroxyphenyl)ethane [149]. 

This radical is relatively stable (we shaii see why shortly), but reacts with itself reversibly in solution. The product of the dimerization of tri phenyl methyl was for 70 years believed to be tetra phenyl ethane but, in 1970, NMR showed that it was, in fact, an unsymmetrical dimer.

Recently, Liu s group also reported the fabrication of thermoresponsive cross-linked hollow poly(A-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) nanocapsules with controlled shell thickness via the combination of surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and click cross-linking. Cross-linked PNIPAM nanocapsules were fabricated by the click cross-linking of PNIPAM shell layer with a tri-functional molecule, l,l,l-fm(4-(2-propynyloxy) phenyl)ethane. Due to the thermo-responsiveness of PNIPAM, cross-linked PNIPAM nanocapsules exhibit thermo-induced collapse/swelling transitions that make it possible to classify them as nanogels. 

Using ATRP techniques in a three-step procedure, a three-arm star copolymer with ABC triblock arms, Y(ABC)3, was prepared, where Y is related to the trifunctional initiator [Davis, K. Materials 3-Hydroxy-, 3,5-dihydroxy, 3-amino- and 3,5-diaminobenzoic acid were gifts of BAYER AG (Leverkusen, FRG) and used without further purification. Bisphenol-P and bisaniline-P were purchased from Kennedy and Klim (Little Silver, N.J., USA). Piperazine, l,l,l-tris(4 -hydroxy-phenyl)ethane, phloretic acid tetrahydroxy spirobisindane were purchased from Aldrich Co. (Milwaukee, Wise., USA). All hydroxy acids and phenols were acetylated with an excess of acetic acid and a catalytic amount of pyridine in refluxing toluene. All silylations were conducted with chloro-trimethylsilane and triethylamine in refluxing toluene or dioxane. 

Trimethylsilyl 3-acetoxybenzoate (60 mmol) and l,l,l-tris(4 -acetoxy-phenyl)ethane (2,1, 0.67 or 0.5 mmol) were weighed into a cylindrical glass reactor and reacted and worked up as described above.
