2-Phenoxy ethanol

Some examples of antibacterial agents which owe at least a part of their activity to this ability are tetrachlorosalicylarrilide (TCS), tricarbanilide, trichlorocarbanilide (TCC), pentachlorophenol, di-(5-chloro-2-hydroxyphenyl) sulphide (fentichlor) and 2-phenoxy ethanol. 

Numerous different mechanistic approaches have been applied for this combination. First, cyclization of phenoxy-ethanols 203, in the presence of (diacetoxyiodo)benzene and iodine, gave a mixture of 1,4-benzodioxane 13 and 6-iodo-l,4-benzodioxane 204 via alkoxy radicals (Equation 36) <1997J(P 1)787, 1996TL2441>.

The synthesis, physicochemical properties, and characteristics are presented of PVC plasticisers based on pyromellitic tetraesters with a symmetrical and mixed structure respectively. The two alcohols studied were a special aromatic alcohol with a complex structure, such as 2-phenoxy-ethanol and a long branched aliphatic alcohol such as isotridecanol. All showed good thermal resistance, versatile viscosity, and the esters with a mixed structure are shown to have adequate plasticising properties for PVC technology. 21 refs.

Erbon administered perorally to sheep is metabolised to 2,4,S-trichlorophenol and 2-(2,4,5-trichlorophenoxy)ethanol and is excreted mainly in the urine. Rumen fluid is able also to metabolise erbon in vitro into 2-(2,4,5-trichloro-phenoxy)ethanol. 

The first step in the synthesis of phenoxyethanols is the preparation of the respective chlorophenol. This is followed by its condensation to the phenoxy-ethanol compound. 

HC1 H20 and a molecular weight of 236.65. Other ingredients include ceteareth-20, cetearyl alcohol, dime-thicone, glyceryl stearate, methylparaben, mineral oil, PEG-100 stearate, phenoxy ethanol, propylparaben, stearyl alcohol, and water.

From these data the solvents are identified as phenoxy ethanol (PE), benzyl alcohol (BA), and propylene glycol (PG). The methyl ethers, which are also detected, are suffixed by ME. It would appear that the resin is a polyvinyl pyrrolidone type, as indicated by the detection of the dimer (PVP2) and trimer (PVP3). Mass spectral data suggest that the peak marked DIAZ is derived from a diazo dye.

Phenoxy ethanol is mentioned in the EC positive list of preservatives for cosmetic products (maximum authorized concentration 1%) In general it is applied in combination with other preservatives, such as />-hydroxy benzoic acid esters (Section 6.1.10), l,2-dibromo-2,4-dicyanobutane (Section 15.11) and others. More effective is the 2-phenoxy ethanol hemiformal (Section 3.1.3). 

As is demonstrated in Table 14 2-phenoxy-ethanol hemiformal is much more effective than 2-phenoxy ethanol itself (see Section 1.7). It may be used alone or in combination with other active ingredients, especially those which exhibit a more fungicidal effect, for the in-can protection of cosmetic products, and also as a preservative for other industrial fluids. Although 2-phenoxy ethanol hemiformal is not mentioned in the EC positive list of preservatives for cosmetic products, there should be no inhibition for this application as it consists of 2-phenoxy ethanol and formaldehyde (addition product) which are registered in the a.m. EC list. Additionally, 2-phenoxy ethanol hemiformal may be regarded as a solvent with antimicrobial effectiveness which proves useful for the formulation of preservatives.
