Petroleum inorganic origin

Petroleum asphalts, compared to native asphalts, are organic with only trace amounts of inorganic materials. They derive their characteristics from the nature of their cmde origins with some variation possible by choice of manufacturing process. Although there are a number of refineries or refinery units whose prime function is to produce asphalt, petroleum asphalt is primarily a product of integrated refineries (Fig. 1). Cmdes may be selected for these refineries for a variety of other product requirements and the asphalt (or residuum) produced may vary somewhat in characteristics from one refinery-cmde system to another and even by cut-point (Table 2) and asphalt content (Fig. 2) (5,6). The first truly synthetic resin was developed by Baekeland in 1911 (phenol-formaldehyde). This was soon followed by a petroleum-derived product called coumarone-indene, which did indeed have the properties of a resin. The first synthetic elastomer was polychloroprene (1931) originated by Nieuwland and later called neoprene. Since then many new types of synthetic polymers have been synthesized, perhaps the most sophisticated of which are nylon and its congeners (polyamides, by Carothers), and the inorganic silicone group (Kipping). Other important types are alkyds, acrylics, aminoplasts, polyvinyl halides, polyester, epoxies, and polyolefins. [Pg.1083]

The first theories of petroleum origin suggested inorganic sources. These theories are no longer considered probable. The idea of an inorganic source came from the hydrocarbons themselves, since methane, ethane, acetylene, benzene can be made from inorganic substances. [Pg.47]
