Both the nature and amount of R D carried out varies significantly across the various sectors of the chemical industry. In sectors which involve large-scale production of basic chemicals and where the chemistry, products and technology change only slowly because the processes are mature, R D expenditure is at the lower end of the range for the chemical industry. Most of this will be devoted to process improvement and effluent treatment. Examples include ammonia, fertilizers and chloralkali production (section 10.5) from the inorganic side, and basic petrochemical intermediates such as ethylene (sections 12.3.1-3) from the organic side. [Pg.50]

Companies such as Wedeco, Trojan, Siemens and FMC were able to bring the knowhow from bench scale to full scale applications. FMC (OHP ) and Siemens (Zimpro ) for instance, have a vast number of references for their processes in the chemical, petrochemical and pharmaceutical industry, where COD reductions above 90% were achieved for effluents with COD concentrations between 1,000 and 10,000 mg/1. Even though AOPs have not been applied, up to date, to treat PW, from the results of several works published in the literature and from the experience from full scale applications in other industries, there is a great potential for AOPs in the PW treatment market, in particular for certain niche applications. [Pg.105]
