Personal monitor development, status

Occupational pesticide exposure holds a peculiar status within the field of occupational health and safety, both from a scientific and regulatory perspective. Methods for personal monitoring of dermal exposure first arose in the context of pesticide applications in agriculture, pioneered by scientists in the USA Public Health Service (Batchelor and Walker, 1954 Durham and Wolfe, 1962). These methods gained worldwide recognition in the early 1960s, and remain a component of exposure assessment practice today. This work pre-dated most personal monitoring methods that were developed for industrial workplaces. 

The vital signs would be transmitted to the triage unit by interfacing the sensate liner with a personal status monitor developed by the US Defense Advanced Projects Research Agency (DARPA). 

The Conduct of Operations Manual requires shift operations personnel to be attentive to system conditions and parameter trends by monitoring the information displays associated with each person s duties. It states that operations personnel should remain diligent and actively pursue resolution of safety concerns. Shift operations personnel are required to constantly remain alert and maintain awareness of plant status, anticipating conditions that could adversely affect plant reliability. The manual states that operators shall be alert and attentive to alarms and, if appropriate, shall take timely action to address and correct the cause of alarms. Additionally, it states that operators shall monitor the panel displays frequently to determine trends and to detect the development of problems. Operators are required to take prompt actions to determine the cause of the abnormalities, advise shift management of the abnormalities, and take corrective action.
