Personal experience

To recall a personal experience, my research on carbocations and their related chemistry, because of its significance and relevance to biological systems and processes, was supported in part by NIH for nearly 30 years, for which I am most grateful. In 1994, however, my support was not renewed. I was told that it was judged that no further... [Pg.229]

Even after 30 years of research activity in the field, my personal experience encompasses only a fraction of the methodologies included in the book. I have selected the methods and examples on the basis of utility and reliability as judged by frequency of application in the literature or by indication that specific procedures are especially convenient. I will welcome comments from chemists whose experience, good or bad, will help in recognizing the best of the many methods that are available. [Pg.182]

Selection of pump for a given appHcation is not a trivial task. Often more than one pump type can accomplish the required job. Thus a final choice on a pump type is often a result of personal experience and usage history. As a rule of thumb, the choice of a kinetic, such as centrifugal, or a positive displacement pump is made on the basis of the specific speed. Whereas specific speed is appHcable primarily for centrifugal but not positive displacement pumps, the US value can be used as a guide. Generally, for calculated values of specific speed, eg, nS > 10 [NS > 500), kinetic-type pumps are usually selected. For nS < 10 [NS < 500), positive displacement pumps are typically appHed. [Pg.297]

C. Daniel, App/ications of Statistics to lndustria/Experimentation, ]oE Wiley Sons, Inc., New York, 1976. This book is based on the personal experiences and insights of the author, an eminent practitioner of industrial appHcations of experimental design. It provides extensive discussions and concepts, especially in the areas of factorial and fractional factorial designs. "The book should be of use to experimenters who have some knowledge of elementary statistics and to statisticians who want simple explanations, detailed examples, and a documentation of the variety of outcomes that may be encountered." Some of the unusual features are chapters on "Sequences of fractional repHcates" and "Trend-robust plans," and sections entided, "What is the answer (what is the question )," and "Conclusions and apologies."... [Pg.524]

This section seeks to summarize preferred routes to various types of pyrimidine. To some extent it is based on the personal experience of the present author, who is well aware of its resulting inadequacies. [Pg.123]

Individuals tend to acclimate themselves and their concerns (sometimes to their detriment) about the risk of a given activity if they have a large amount of personal experience in dealing with a well-known hazard. For example, an individual may accept the risk of driving a car on a busy highway but reject the much lower risk of flying in a commercial airliner. [Pg.59]

Whilst the data presented in such diagrams is useful, particularly where many such diagrams may be inspected simultaneously, I do have certain reservations. The pui-pose of a graph or diagram is to provide an instant visual impact. My personal experience when I look at these diagrams is that the instant impact is of... [Pg.892]

Of the many destructive analytical techniques, only the most widely used methods, especially tliose based on the personal experience of the author during the past 28 years will be discussed fully More background information on the various techniques for fluonne analysis can be found in the literature [I, 2, 3, 4, 5]. [Pg.1023]

Examples and anecdotes are often useful an overreliance on personal experience or "war stories" loses attention. Similarly, an argument that tries to address every conceivable contingency, quirk, and variation will almost certainly fail to convince, because of simple overkill. [Pg.11]

The breakdown of the job into steps is based upon personal experience of the planner or from history or standard job plans. Depending upon the job and skill level of the craftsman, it may require one activity or one hundred. Highly skilled mechanics may require a higher degree of instruction in the plan or how to complete the job, as well as closer supervision and support during job execution. [Pg.829]

Although lithium is not a true antipsychotic drug, it is considered with the antipsychotics because of its use in regulating the severe fluctuations of the manic phase of bipolar disorder (a psychiatric disorder characterized by severe mood swings of extreme hyperactivity to depression). During the manic phase, the person experiences altered thought processes, which can lead to bizarre delusions. The drug diminishes the frequency and intensity of hyperactive (manic) episodes. [Pg.294]

As a follow-up to our book Dienes in the Diels-Alder Reaction (1990) and in light of our personal experience as well as the reviews and books that have been published on this topic to date, we decided that a book collecting and describing the experimental methods that have been developed to perform the Diels-Alder reaction would be a useful tool for researchers working in organic synthesis. [Pg.351]

Learning is seen as a two-way process, with the learner interpreting and assimilating information and knowledge to their personal experiences and prior learning. [Pg.12]

Information from other people, books, personal experiences and/or practice is seen as new perspectives to be considered and possibly used to reconstruct the learner s existing internal knowledge - new information is no longer seen as information to be added to a store of knowledge. [Pg.12]

Effective mentors have a portfolio of models that they can draw upon to help mentees understand the issues they face. These models can be self-generated (i.e. the result of personal experience), drawn from elsewhere (e.g. models of company structure, interpersonal behaviours, strategic planning, career planning) or -... [Pg.158]

The ecstatic tenor of Khunrath s rhetoric is itself perhaps modelled on the spiritus rhetoricus of Erasmus early hermeneutics in which he had explored the spiritual sense of a text as being a force of divine grace that could spontaneously transform the reader. It was the personal experience of the sense of scripture that Erasmus had favoured in the Enchiridion Hence, also the outcries of Hallelujah and Lob Herr that punctuate, or conclude, Khunrath s writings. [Pg.57]

An exercise consisting of 24 statements describing a personal experience of a safety related issue that participants have to match to other members of the group. [Pg.14]

To demonstrate that personal experiences of health and safety situations are commonplace in everyday life. [Pg.14]

Teachers and group leaders should be sensitive to the possibility that some participants may be adversely affected by some incidents within the story due to personal experience. [Pg.32]

Any situation that participants might find themselves in could present potential risks. Warning signs and labels are a common feature of everyday life but their very commonness lessens their impact. Some situations, however, come with no such warnings attached and the risks may be less obvious, but still need serious consideration. Teachers and group leaders should be sensitive to the possibility that some participants may have had personal experience of one or more of the risky situations included. [Pg.49]
