Isotherm Models for Adsorption of Mixtures. Of the following models, all but the ideal adsorbed solution theory (lAST) and the related heterogeneous ideal adsorbed solution theory (HIAST) have been shown to contain some thermodynamic inconsistencies. References to the limited available Hterature data on the adsorption of gas mixtures on activated carbons and 2eohtes have been compiled, along with a brief summary of approximate percentage differences between data and theory for the various theoretical models (16). In summary, because of the small percentage of houses with radon-in-water problems, few builders will have to deal with this issue. In summary, when undertaking a project such as the recovery of LNAPL, treatment of the coproduced water, prior to reinjection, may not be beneficial or technically necessary. A large percentage of the spilled or leaked petroleum hydrocarbon (40 to 60%) will be retained in the unsaturated zone as residual saturation. This residual hydrocarbon cannot be recovered by conventional withdrawal techniques. Without removing this continual source of contamination to the groundwater system, dissolved contamination will continue. Therefore, in most cases, it may be pointless and extremely costly to treat the coproduced groundwater prior to reinjection while the free- and residual-phase hydrocarbon contamination exists.

For the most part, the meta-analyses used in this text are based on fourfold contingency tables, which include the number of responders or nonresponders to a given treatment. An advantage of dichotomous data is that information from each individual subject can be abstracted (i.e., the results come from actual patients). In one sense, this is not strictly a meta-analysis, because calculations are not done on summary statistical parameters but on observations of individual subjects. Such an approach has the advantage of directness, however, because the percentage of patients who respond or do not respond to a new treatment, standard treatment, or placebo is intuitively meaningful to clinicians, whereas a change of 0.8 SD units may not be.
