Pentosan content

These observations have a bearing also on certain claims37 which have been made concerning a supposed increase in the pentosan content when pectin is heated in alkaline solution. It is obvious that any increase in the proportion of pentosan in the product cannot be due to decarboxylation of the pectic acid molecule with the formation of the araban. The... [Pg.264]

The determination of the structure of a plant gum involves the establishment of its homogeneity, its equivalent weight, and rotation and its uronic acid and pentosan content by the well-known methods. The nature of the constituent sugars and the uronic acid are then determined, after hydrolysis of the gums, by ciystallization or by conversion into characteristic crystalline derivatives. As an example the hexose mannose may be identified as the free sugar or in the form of its anilide, methyl glycoside or phenylhydrazone. Autohydrolysis of the acid... [Pg.245]

Bagasse in admixture with molasses has also been suggested as a cattle food. Bagasse, because of its pentosan content, may also be used as a source of furfural. - ... [Pg.296]

Iowa. Modem industrial prepns start with agricultural residues such as oat hulls, corn cobs, rice hulls, bran, etc, which have a relatively high pentosan content (Ref 10). In these processes pentosans are hydrolyzed to pentoses by acid digestion, and these split out water internally to form forfurals ... [Pg.624]

Cellulosic raw materials. Linters or wood pulp cellulose are in use as raw material for manufacturing lacquer nitrocellulose. It is essential to use very well purified and bleached raw material. Wood cellulose should contain mainly a-cellulose. The admissible pentosan content is limited to traces only, because these compounds are a source of products insoluble in organic solvents. Cellophane can also be utilized for nitration. [Pg.410]

The other carbohydrates in cane juice are the soluble polysaccharides vaguely classified under the terms "hemi-celluloses, soluble gums and pectins. It is possible that some of these polysaccharides may enter the juice during the milling of the cane as the plant cell structure is destroyed. A gummy product has been isolated from cane fiber by alkali extraction followed by alcohol precipitation. Acid hydrolysis of this substance yielded crystalline D-xylose and L-arabinose.10 Such gums in Trinidad cane juices were isolated by alcohol precipitation at suitable hydrogen ion concentration and assayed for pentose content by the Tollens 2-fural-dehyde assay the results showed an apparent pentosan content of 0.04-0.07%u of the Brix solids. [Pg.293]
