Since the 1950s, polyethylene (PE) has been applied in surgery. At that time after PE implantation, only formation of so-called granulated tissue around a polymer was found, that is a weak response of the body to the implant. PE is not widely used for the substitution of soft tissues, but it is an important substitute for bone tissues, i.e. the head of the hip bone and other elements of the pelvis bones. The wear resistance property of low pressure PE makes its application in bone tissue substitution. HOPE can be widely used in pelvic prostheses [54]. [Pg.256]

With this practical application in mind, we arranged the chapters mainly according to the different disorders of the female pelvis and not with regard to technical aspects of the imaging modalities or strictly anatomic considerations. The main chapters dealing with the different disorders are preceded by an interesting presentation of a new interpretation of the anatomy of the female pelvis and a general introduction to state-of-the-art CT and MRI techniques. [Pg.398]

While intravenous contrast material is undisput-edly needed in any multisystem trauma patient, the appHcation of oral contrast material is not uniformly recommended. In patients with penetrating trauma to the chest, abdomen, or pelvis, oral and rectal contrast media application increases sensitivity for the detection of hollow organ injury (Shanmuganathan et al. 2004 Sampson et ah 2006). However, installation of contrast fluids takes some time, and patients that are unable to swallow need a gastric tube before contrast material can be given.
