The plate granulators ensure continuous granulation. Powdered aminoplast is supplied to an inclined rotary plate whereby it is lifted and then lowered. Agglomerating liquid is forced into the formed layer by injectors. The powder moistened with the liquid is pelletized. The formed pellets reaching a predetermined size are fed to the plate and then by gravity to an area wherein drying and subsequent sizing occur. 

Preferred supplied forms are powders (gold bronze), pastes (aluminum) in plasticizers (like white oil, DINP etc.) and pellets in polyethylene. Due to the chemical nature of gold bronze, there are special coated pigments for use in high temperature processes (tarnish- or heat-resistant gold bronze). Also for use in PVC, special chemically resistant aluminum and gold bronze pigments are available. 

Sodium hypochlorite is one of the best disinfectants known, capable of killing bacteria, yeasts, fungus, spores, and even viruses. Because it is an excellent disinfectant as well as a bleaching agent, it is used in many household cleaners. Sodium hypochlorite is also used to disinfect water supplies and swimming pools (although calcium hypochlorite in powder or pellet form is often used as a substitute, due to the convenience of its solid form). 

Gunpowder was supplied in pellet form as a propellant and the substitutes were similarly manufactured. They were therefore called powders. Subsequent developments have led to the provision of propellent explosives in special and often massive form. Nevertheless, the term powder is still retained for their nomenclature, and the individual unit of the charge, no matter how large, is still called a grain. 

Forms of Yeast. Yeast is available in several forms compressed yeast, cream (effectively a liquid), dried into pellets and powders claimed to be instantly active. Bakeries normally use compressed yeast, which with cream yeast must be kept under refrigeration. A supply of dried yeast will always be kept handy lest the yeast delivery should fail or the refrigerator breaks down. 

Other uses for coal-tar pitch include production as a binder for foundry cores, as a sealant for dry batteries, and in the manufacture of clay pigeons. Pelleted pitch used as the binder in foundry cores is a hard pitch supplied as spherical granules which are formed by a spray-cooling process. Clay pigeons consist of disks molded from a mixture of hard pitch and a mineral filler such as clay or limestone dust. 

In dust-free and dispersed form, they are supplied as concentrated plastic granules (masterbatch pellets), as concentrated pastes, and as liquid colors. These products are added at different stages in the processing of plastics. 

Rotomolding. Nylon-6, nylon-11, and nylon-12 can be used in rotomolding and are generally supplied for these applications as a powder or with a small pellet size. The process involves tumbling the resin in a heated mold to form large, thin-walled moldings. Nylon-11 and nylon-12 use mold temperatures of 230—280°C and nylon-6 is processed at over 300°C. An inert gas atmosphere is preferred to avoid oxidation.

Caustic Soda.—-This is supplied in powder, stick, flake and pellet forms, the last two being convenient to use. The pure variety comes on the market in the form of sticks. In weighing out a quantity, the sticks should not be handled. Pieces of a desired size can be broken off by elevating one end and dealing a sharp blow with a knife or file at the desired point. The same remark applies to caustic potash sticks. 30—40% solutions of caustic soda are available in commerce. Usual impurities chloride, carbonate, and chlorate of sodium. 

Chemically, THV Fluoroplastic (hereafter referred to as THV) is a terpolymer of tetrafluoroethylene (TFE), hexafluoropropylene (HFP), and vinylidene fluoride (VDF) produced by emulsion polymerization. The resulting dispersion is either processed into powders and pellets or concentrated with emulsifier and supplied in that form to the market.91 Currently, the manufacturer is Dyneon LLC and there are essentially nine commercial grades (five dry and four aqueous dispersions) available that differ in the monomer ratios and consequently in melting points, chemical resistance, and flexibility. 

Perhaps the most efficient and convenient methods for providing a supply of dry oxygen-free inert gas employs BTS catalyst (BASF) in conjunction with molecular sieves. The catalyst is a pelleted form of finely divided copper on an inert support and is used in a system like that shown in Figure 6.7.
