Since our interest lies precisely in the analysis of the mechanisms at work when peer interaction promotes individual learning in problem solving situations (Blaye, 1988, 1989a, Light Blaye, 1990), we are going to develop a few points on this aspect. 

In order to get clearer empirical evidence on these crucial points, our choice, in the exploratory studies reported below was to optimise the opportunity for analysing the influence of peer interaction on monitoring processes by using a problem solving task which involves advance planning and thus puts a premium on conscious and explicit monitoring and control. 

The first study conducted in collaboration with Paul Light and Richard Joiner (Open University, U.K.) with 11-year-old children, illustrates the overall benefit obtained from peer interaction not only during pair work but more interestingly in the children s individual performance on the post-test. The second study used a small sample of adults who were just as much novices as the children in the task domain and in the use of computers (maybe even more so since some children play video games on their home computer which might have some... 

Results The global comparison between the outcomes of peer and individual work gave very much the same pattern as was obtained with the children, both in terms of overall proportion of success (the superiority of peer interaction was substantial only on the second session) and in terms of more qualitative indicators (Blaye Light, 1989). 

What is original here is the suggestion that peer interaction can significantly improve the efficacy of this exploration.
