Analysis of the RP curvature k(s) helps to identify those path regions with strong curvature and a coupling between translational and transverse vibrational modes. For this purpose, the curvature is investigated in terms of normal mode-curvature coupling coefficients and adiabatic internal mode-curvature coupling amplitudes At.,. 

One of the most usefiil applications of the mean free path concept occurs in the theory of transport processes in systems where there exist gradients of average but local density, local temperature, and/or local velocity. The existence of such gradients causes a transfer of particles, energy or momentum, respectively, from one region of the system to another.

The strong point of AES is that it provides a quick measurement of elements in the surface region of conducting samples. For elements having Auger electrons with energies hr the range of 100-300 eV where the mean free path of the electrons is close to its minimum, AES is considerably more surface sensitive than XPS. 

As already mentioned, the motion of a chaotic flow is sensitive to initial conditions [H] points which initially he close together on the attractor follow paths that separate exponentially fast. This behaviour is shown in figure C3.6.3 for the WR chaotic attractor at /c 2=0.072. The instantaneous rate of separation depends on the position on the attractor. However, a chaotic orbit visits any region of the attractor in a recurrent way so that an infinite time average of this exponential separation taken along any trajectory in the attractor is an invariant quantity that characterizes the attractor. If y(t) is a trajectory for the rate law fc3.6.2] then we can linearize the motion in the neighbourhood of y to get... 

In the classical region of space, where the potential is less than the energy, the standard formula leads to an approximate relation between phase and modulus in the form of the following path integral ([237], Section 28)... 

A different example of non-adiabatic effects is found in the absorption spectrum of pyrazine [171,172]. In this spectrum, the, Si state is a weak structured band, whereas the S2 state is an intense broad, fairly featureless band. Importantly, the fluorescence lifetime is seen fo dramatically decrease in fhe energy region of the 82 band. There is thus an efficient nonradiative relaxation path from this state, which results in the broad spectrum. Again, this is due to vibronic coupling between the two states [109,173,174]. 

The case where the point B a,b) is not surrounded by the path F (see Fig. 17a). In this case, both Xp and x, are analytic functions of the coordinates in the region enclosed by F, and therefore the integrands of the two integrals can be replaced by the corresponding derivatives calculated at the respective intermediate points, namely,... 

Vector quantities, such as a magnetic field or the gradient of electron density, can be plotted as a series of arrows. Another technique is to create an animation showing how the path is followed by a hypothetical test particle. A third technique is to show flow lines, which are the path of steepest descent starting from one point. The flow lines from the bond critical points are used to partition regions of the molecule in the AIM population analysis scheme. 

The Z-spray inlet causes ions and neutrals to follow different paths after they have been formed from the electrically charged spray produced from a narrow inlet tube. The ions can be drawn into a mass analyzer after most of the solvent has evaporated away. The inlet derives its name from the Z-shaped trajectory taken by the ions, which ensures that there is little buildup of products on the narrow skimmer entrance into the mass spectrometer analyzer region. Consequently, in contrast to a conventional electrospray source, the skimmer does not need to be cleaned frequently and the sensitivity and performance of the instrument remain constant for long periods of time. 

After the skimmer, the ions must be prepared for mass analysis, and electronic lenses in front of the analyzer are used to adjust ion velocities and flight paths. The skimmer can be considered to be the end of the interface region stretching from the end of the plasma flame. Some sort of light stop must be used to prevent emitted light from the plasma reaching the ion collector in the mass analyzer (Figure 14.2).
