Past History

This chapter examines die history of accidents from early incidents to recent catastrophes. In conjunction widi diis review, die material will study the evolution of safety precautions, particularly as diey apply to chemical plants. A crucial part of any design project is the inclusion of safety controls. Wliedier die plans involve a chemical plant, a nuclear reactor, or a dmiway, steps must be taken to minimize the likelihood, or eonsequences, of accidents. It is also important to realize how accident plaiming lias improved in order to monitor today s adi anced teclmologies. This cliapter reviews a variety of actual accidents in order to provide an understanding of diese phenomena, which will supplement the subsequent chapters tliat deal widi diese subjects in significant detail. [Pg.3]

A solid, by definition, is a portion of matter that is rigid and resists stress. Although the surface of a solid must, in principle, be characterized by surface free energy, it is evident that the usual methods of capillarity are not very useful since they depend on measurements of equilibrium surface properties given by Laplace s equation (Eq. II-7). Since a solid deforms in an elastic manner, its shape will be determined more by its past history than by surface tension forces. [Pg.257]

Nortriptyline s mechanism of action is thought to relate to its noradrenergic and serotonergic reuptake blockade, because these two neurotransmitters have been implicated in the neurobiology of nicotine dependence. Side effects of nortiptyline are typical of tricyclic antidepressants and include dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, and orthostatic hypotension. Control urine should be collected from individuals who have no apparent past history of exposure to the active ingredient. This control urine must be stored frozen until used for field fortification purposes. The urine is then thawed, shaken well, and a certain amount should be aliquoted into a small jar/bottle to use for field fortification. The active ingredient is then added to the urine using a 1-mL volumetric pipet, the solution is shaken well, and the sample is immediately frozen. Occasionally, the fortified sample can be left at room temperature or at some lower temperature in a liquid state to simulate field storage during collection of the urine sample.
