Friction resistance under the spread footings combined with passive resistance will be used to resist lateral forces, The following lateral forces are computed in terms of load per unit length of wall even though much of the toads will be resisted by individual spread footings. Frictional resistance is a function of vertical loads, not footing width. 

The following design represents one way of handling a foundation for this situation. Other design options might include a combination of vertical piles and passive resistance. The Equivalent-Static Design Method will be used as described in section 7.7.1. 

Assume foundation will be stem walls along the exterior with spread footings at columns, Passive resistance wifi be provided by stem wall over length of spread footing. Passive resistance at center column will be ignored since the width of column support is small.

Probably the most commonly referred to compound which accounts for a form of passive resistance of a chemical nature is protocatechuic acid (6.16) which is found in yellow and red skinned onions and prevents the germination of spores of the onion smudge fungus, Colletotrichum circinans. Thus, protocatechuic acid serves as a barrier to infection prior to penetration. Once penetration occurs the compound is ineffective.

Early experimentation exploits new freedom that rebellion has grudgingly been granted. With this success in mind, the early adolescent begins to test other limits and seeks to satisfy a growing curiosity about the world, particularly activities allowed to adults but forbidden to the young. 

Nothing so aggravates an earnest person as a passive resistance.
