Participation principle

Considering the descriptors used in this paper, it is thus necessary to decide if, for example, the bioaccumulation expressed by log Kow is more or less important than acute toxicity for fish expressed by LC50. Weighting of the descriptors is a way to take into account additional external judgements. It can be seen as formalism to introduce the participation principle in the ranking procedure.

Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) is a self-help organization for people whose common goal is recovery from alcoholism, and it is the most widely accessed resource for individuals with alcohol problems (McCrady and Miller 1993). The philosophy is based on the concept of alcoholism as a chronic disease that cannot be cured, but one that can be halted by means of complete abstinence. AA has described 12 principles or steps to guide those in recovery. Twelve-step facilitation, a manual-based psychotherapy to promote AA participation (Nowinski et al. 1992), was equally efficacious, compared with cognitive-behavioral and motivational enhancement therapies, in a large study of treatments for alcohol dependence (Project Match Research Group, 1997).

The participants The range of participants should, whenever possible, be chosen in such a manner that widely different methods (based on different physical or chemical principles) can be used. The number of participants (recommended 15) should be sufficient to allow meaningful statistical processing of the results. When the laboratories feel the need for a CRM, either because the available calibrants are not comparable and a primary calibrant appears necessary for traceability, or because a reliable certified control material is needed but not available, then it is recommended that these laboratories do not plan a certification project entirely on their own, but that they involve laboratories having a background in traceability. 

Table 14 can be regarded as providing a reasonable overall picture, even if the results cannot applied to any particular case. However, if the underlying principle is accepted, it becomes clear that improvements in a single stage, for example the reduction of instrument variation, has a negligible beneficial effect (if this variation was not outside the normal range ).
