Part-time work education

It sounded terrific. I had spent eight years scratching out the cost of my education with the help of scholarships, college loans, and part-time work as a sperm-donor, file clerk, common laborer, camp counselor, typist and night technician at a downtown blood bank. I worked straight through summers and almost every vacation break. 

Medical Programs. Large chemical plants have at least one hill-time physician who is at the plant five days a week and on call at all other times. Smaller plants either have part-time physicians or take injured employees to a nearby hospital or clinic by arrangement with the company compensation-insurance carrier. When part-time physicians or outside medical services are used, there is Httle opportunity for medical personnel to become familiar with plant operations or to assist in improving the health aspects of plant work. Therefore, it is essential that chemical-ha2ards manuals and procedures, which highlight symptoms and methods of treatment, be developed. A hill-time industrial physician should devote a substantial amount of time to becoming familiar with the plant, its processes, and the materials employed. Such education enables the physician to be better prepared to treat injuries and illnesses and to advise on preventive measures. 

The need for income is the primary reason people seek work. With retirement there is less need for income The cost of educating children has usually been met, the home mortgage has been paid off, and daily living expenses are less. When you compare your income and expenses in retirement, you may find that you no longer need to generate income. However, if your retirement is not adequately funded, working either full- or part-time may be necessary. 

Judith Bennett is currently senior lecturer in the Department of Educational Studies at the University of York, UK, and Chair of the Research Committee of the Association for Science Education. Having obtained her first degree in Chemistry-with-Education, she taught chemistry and physics for a number of years, during which period she studied part time for an MA and PhD in Science Education. She then worked as Senior Editor of Science The Sailers Approach before moving to her current post. Her initial research focus on gender issues has developed into an interest in context-based approaches to the teaching of science and their effects on pupils, particularly their attitudes to science. 

When Tom asked me to write a foreword for this very important text, I was honored to help play a part in the education of today s safety practitioners. Dr. Schneid and I have worked together since the late 1980s. We have authored several texts together, and this text on Discrimination Law Issues for the Safety Professional is a must have in today s challenging and changing times. 

Rebbecca Schramm, MS, holds an MS in safety, secnrity, and emergency management from Eastern Kentucky University and a BA in secondary education (English major, communications minor) from Western Michigan University. She works as a part-time facilitator at Eastern Kentncky University and has experience in human resources, regulatory affairs, and facilities engineering. Schramm is the environmental health and safety supervisor at Stryker Instruments in Kalamazoo, Michigan, where she lives with her husband, Alex, and her two children. Max and Mackenzie.
