A role for milk fat in cancer risk has not been examined adequately in epidemiological studies, because milk fat is not consumed as a single dietary item, but as a component of dairy products and dairy products also contain non-lipid components with anti-cancer potential (Parodi, 2001a, b). On the other hand, seven studies were found in the literature, where milk fat or butter diets were compared with diets containing equal amounts of polyunsaturated vegetable oils or margarine in animal models of colon, breast, and skin cancer. All seven studies showed that there was less tumor development with milk fat-based diets (Parodi, 2004). [Pg.631]

Findig" means resourceful or inventive it was surely intended as a parody of Rudolf Fittig s name. "Tautomerism" had been defined and named by Conrad Laar in 1885, and Lothar Meyer had proposed a "centric" benzene model in 1872 probably both theories were being spoofed here. [Pg.286]

The molecular approach which we will see eventually proved to be most successful in treating negative is based on the work of Doi [23]. Doi noted that the well established phenomenological theories for thermotropes (which he termed TLP for Ericksen, Leslie and Parodi [68]) which is successful in describing many dynamic phenomena in MLC nematics, is limited for polymeric liquid crystals in that it does not predict nonlinear viscoelasticity. Doi s approach determines the phenomenological coefficients from molecular parameters, so that the effects of, for example, molecular weight and concentration can be treated. He considers a single molecule (the test rod ) and notes that as concentration increases, constraints on its motion are imposed by collisions with other rods. This constraint can be modeled as a tube... [Pg.371]

The threshold voltage observed experimentally for a transition from a planar to a homeotropic texture depends on the layer thickness according to Uq oc (for the Frederiks transition the threshold voltage would be independent of thickness). The model accounting for the experimental data has been developed by Parodi [109]. [Pg.352]

Parodi [109] investigated five alternatives for the formation of the transition layers between the surface and the volume, by allowing for the possibility of the appearance of vacancies, by areas filled with the translationally disordered (nematic) phase, by separate cylinders of the smectic phase, etc. It is characteristic of all these models that the firee energy density is written in the form... [Pg.352]

Texture transitions are particularly pronounced when an electric field is applied to materials having a large dielectric anisotropy. A planar texture undergoes transition to a quasihomeotropic optically transparent texture via intermediate structural defects [150,151]. The threshold voltage observed experimentally for a transition from a planar to a homeotropic texture depends on the layer thickness according to f/oc (for the Frederiks transition the threshold voltage is independent of thickness). A model that accounts for the experimental data (at least partly) has been developed by Parodi [152] who assumed the formation of transition layers between the surface and the bulk of a sample. A discrepancy between the calculated and observed periods of the texture instability may be due to a nonuniform... [Pg.539]

Another further remark is that, when the total non-singular contribution to the curvature energy is very small, say [Pg.15]
