The chemical 1,4-di chlorobenzene is usually called para-DCB or p-DCB, but there are about 20 additional names for it, including para crystals and paracide. It is also called paramoth because it is one of two chemicals commonly used to make mothballs. 1,4-Dichlorobenzene is used to make deodorant blocks used in garbage cans and restrooms, as well as to help control odors in animal-hoi ding facilities. 1,4-Dichlorobenzene has also been used as an insecticide on... [Pg.21]

The comparison of the two isomeric nitroanilines is that of two similar molecules, one (para) crystallizes in a centrosymmetric, the other (meta) in a non-centro-symmetric manner. (6) Thus, only the meta exhibits nonlinear optical properties. Dimers of these (and several other) nitroanilines were calculated using AMI, and found to be in good agreement with the experimentally determined structures. (7) Here we focus on how these dimers can interact with additional molecules. [Pg.458]

Two alternative commercial operations have been developed to perform the separation. In one, a mixture of the isomers is contacted with a molecular sieve that has pores large enough to accommodate para-xylene but not the meta or ortho isomers. This operation is referred to as adsorption. In another process, the difference in freezing points of the three isomers (para-xylene freezes at 13.3°C, ortho at —25.2°C, and meta at -47.9°C) forms the basis of a crystallization operation. The mixture is cooled to a temperature at which para crystallizes and can then be separated physically from the remaining ortho and meta liquid. [Pg.238]

It should also be considered, however, that the distance of 13 nm between the positions of anti-troponin T1 and T2 is within the size range of an antibody molecule. This made another explanation possible namely, that troponin T is situated at the same location as troponin T2—I-C, in accord with the analysis of the troponin-tropomyosin para-crystal, but that the major portion of the troponin T1 region is embedded within the troponin complex and exposed only in the direction of the Z line. Thus the anti-troponin Ti antibody binds to the antigenic region only from the Z-band side, and the overall position of the antibody is to be shifted from the antigenic region by 10 nm in the direction of the Z line. [Pg.46]

The lower melting point of the ortho isomer is due to its lack of symmetry as compared to the para isomer. Since the latter is more symmetric, it can fit better in the crystal lattice. This necessitates that more energy be required to break the para crystal lattice than the less ordered ortho crystal lattice. Thus, the ortho isomer has a lower melting point. [Pg.920]

The above mother liquor compositions are read off Figure 8.16 at the point at which the line P —> Z cuts the particular isotherm. The total mass of para-crystallized out is calculated by the mixture rule. For example, for 100 kg of original mixture X at 20 (point Y)... [Pg.346]
