Palladium nickel oxide

Black nickel oxide is used as an oxygen donor in three-way catalysts containing rhodium, platinum, and palladium (143). Three-way catalysts, used in automobiles, oxidize hydrocarbons and CO, and reduce NO The donor quaUty, ie, the abiUty to provide oxygen for the oxidation, results from the capabihty of nickel oxide to chemisorb oxygen (see Exhaust control, automotive). [Pg.14]

This Study has shown that reasonably uniform platinum crystallites can be made on y-alumlna, and that platinum and palladium can be segregated and maintained In that form for the most part even after exposure to high temperature oxidation-reduction conditions. Highly dispersed clusters of palladium, nickel, cobalt, and Iron can be observed. Greater durability of the colloidal Pd/C catalysts was also observed in this case. In this special field, earlier work had been done in other laboratories, such as by the Schering Company, Berlin (36), and by Ipatieff (37) in connection with his work on the hydrogenation of camphor and of other organic compounds. At both places, the favorable effect of alkali oxides and earth alkali oxides on nickel, cobalt and copper has been investigated. Similarly, Paal and his coworkers (38) have used a palladium-aluminum hydroxide catalyst in 1913 for the hydrogenation of double bonds. The exchange of a number of compounds in this category with deuterium has been examined by Burwell and his colleagues. n-Heptane has been exchanged over nickel-keiselguhr (43), reduced nickel oxide (29), a series of nickel catalysts of varying crystallite size (37), and over palladium supported on 7-alumina (43). Less extensive studies were also made with 2,3-dimethylbutane (29, 43) and n-hexane (42). [Pg.253]

In (1) the electrolytic process, a nickel of 99.9% purity is produced, along with slimes which may contain gold, silver, platinum, palladium, rhodium, iridium, ruthenium, and cobalt, which are subject to further refining and recovery. In (2) the Mond process, the nickel oxide is combined with carbon monoxide to form nickel carbonyl gas, Ni(CO)4. The impurities, including cobalt, are left as a solid residue. Upon fuitlier heating of the gas to about 180°C, the nickel carbonyl is decomposed, the freed nickel condensing on nickel shot and the carbon monoxide recycled.
