Note At present, there are no cost-effective alternatives or alternative technologies for cholordane and mirex as termiticide, and DDT as the additive of antifouling paint in China. China reportedly plans to eliminate the use and production of chlordane and mirex before 2009 and to elimate the use of DDT as the additive of antifouling paint and as an intermediary in the production of dicofol between 2008 and 2014. The applications of copper complexes are extremely varied and of great importance. Many of them are relevant to other chapters of this volume. Of those pertaining to this chapter, the two most important areas are polymer additives and, particularly, fungicides. The latter may be divided into four main areas crop protection, the protection of wood and that of cotton, and their use in antifouling paints. 

As indicated above, the new applications of organolead have been fostered largely through the interest of ILZRO. The most promising new applications are in the fields of marine antifouling paints, marine borer repellants for wood, antiwear additives for lubricants, polyurethan foam catalysts, and molluscicides for bilharzia control in tropical areas. 

A limited number of marine paint additives exist that can provide antifouling coatings that are nontoxic and fouling repellant. Silicon-free polyacrylates containing a pendant semifluorinated alkyl substituent have been prepared to address this need. 

In addition to the three notices already promulgated, the Agency is planning future Label Improvement Notices on ingredients statements, analytical methods, eye irritation standards, antifouling paints, and farm worker safety.
