Painters

The earliest remaining example of painting on a fabric support is from the twelfth dynasty in Egypt. In Europe, although the technique was known, these supports were not frequently used until the Renaissance, when the increasing size of paintings resulted in a tremendous rise in the popularity of canvas supports, a popularity which has lasted until the present. The fabric used almost exclusively by western painters was linen in the Orient silk (qv)... [Pg.419]

Solvents for A-type inks are aUphatic hydrocarbons, for example, hexane, textile spidts, Apco Thinner, lactane, VM P (varnish makers and painters ) naphtha, and mineral spirits. Aromatic hydrocarbons such as toluene and xylene are solvents for B-type inks. Generally, a blend of aUphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons is commonly used for this type of ink. [Pg.252]

Tetrahydronaphthalene is not a highly toxic compound. A threshold limit value of 25 ppm or 135 mg/m has been suggested for Tetralin. Tetralin vapor is an irritant to the eyes, nose, and throat, and dermatitis has been reported in painters working with it (28). The single-dose oral toxicity LD q for rats is 2.9 g/kg (29). [Pg.483]

Gloss Enamels. In contrast to exterior and flat wall paint, about half of the gloss paint or enamels sold are based on alkyd resins. Professional painters particularly favor the continued use of alkyd gloss paints. The need for reduction of VOC emission levels, especially in California, has led to efforts to increase the soflds content of alkyd paints or overcome the disadvantages of latex gloss paints. [Pg.352]

Manual painting occurs mostiy during touch-up or repair, and is best suited for piping, railings, and other hard to spray places. The conventional tools for manual apphcation are bmshes, rollers, paint pads, and paint mitts. These methods are very slow but are suitable for unskilled appHcators and allow the painter to work the coating deeply into the surface being painted. [Pg.366]

Ownership of the copyright in a work is distinct from ownership of the material object, ie, the copy or phonorecord, in which the copyrighted work is embodied. The transfer of one does not constitute transfer of the other. Eor example, if a painter sells his or her painting, ie, the material object, such as canvas and oils, the painter does not automatically transfer the copyright in it sale of that copyright, so as to allow reproduction of the oil painting in printed posters, does not transfer the material object. [Pg.264]

Industrial painters may suffer adverse health effects from over exposure to paint by skin contact or accidental ingestion, from excessive inhalation of paint aerosol, solvent vapour, or of dust in the case of electrostatically-applied powder coatings (e.g. polyesters containing triglycidyl isocyanurate), or from exposure to thermal degradation products from heated paint or plastic coatings (Table 5.48). [Pg.135]

The loss of the Titanic in 1912 has been the subject of many books. The loss of another luxury ship, the Ville du Havre, off the Newfoundland coast in 1873, as the result of a collision, is less well known. The lifeboats were difficult to detach, as the ship was newly painted and everything was stuck fast many could not be detached in time. The life preservers, along the sides of the deck, w ere also stuck fast. Fifty-seven people were rescued, but 226 drowned. On chemical plants, painters have been known to paint everything in sight [12j. [Pg.288]
