Deming et al. [53-55] also described the formation of hydrogels from di-and triblock copolypeptides based on PLLeuio-4o and PLLysgo-sso (hydrobromide) gelation occurred at a polymer concentration as low as 0.25 wt %. It is thought that the scaffold of the hydrogel is built of twisted fibril assemblies with a core of closely packed poly(L-leucine) a-helices and a corona of cationic poly(L-lysine) chains. [Pg.67]

In these types of polymers the micromechanical behavior depends on the interrelation between cavitation and micronecking. Two examples of deformed SBM diblock copolymers with 76% PS and hexagonal-packed poly(butyl methacrylate) (PBMA) cylinders embedded in the PS matrix are shown in Fig. 3.9. Figure 3.9(a) shows craze-like deformation zones running perpendicular to the main strain direction (shown by an arrow). Inside the crazes, both the PBMA cylinders and PS matrix show large plastic deformation. In Fig. 3.9(b) a craze is seen, created by a cellular structure of cavitated PBMA cylinders and plastic deformation of the PS matrix [21], Several types of deformation structures and crazes can be formed in block copolymers initiated by cavitation of one phase and plastic deformation of both phases. However, due to structures on much smaller length scales, there are a number of unique characteristics of the deformation mechanisms [6]. [Pg.230]

The conducting polymer poly(sulfur nitride) is unusual in that it is crystalline, consisting of chains of sulfur and nitrogen packed in parallel. [Pg.241]

The resistance of the polymer to oils and organic solvents can be direcdy attributed to the hydroxyl fiinctionahty and the fihn-forrning properties of the polymer. Treated paper substrates display a significant amount of oil resistance, which make them valuable for packing papers and food-grade paperboard containers. This performance improvement is achieved despite the fact that the 1—3 wt % add-on level, typical of size press appHcations, is too low to provide a continuous poly(vinyl alcohol) film. [Pg.489]

There are no significant health hazards arising from exposure to poly(vinyl chloride) at ambient temperature (154—158). However, a British study has found a small decrease in breathing capacity for workers who smoked and were exposed to vinyl resin dust (159). This decrease was about one-seventh of that caused by normal aging and about equal to that expected with a one-pack-a-day cigarette smoker. [Pg.508]

Types of air strippers include packed towers, tray towers, and spray towers. Packed towers are packed or filled with small forms made of polyethylene [9002-88-4] stainless steel, poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) [9002-86-2] or ceramic that provide large surface area to volume ratios which increase transfer rates into the air stream. Packed towers operate in countercurrent mode, that is, the aqueous stream enters at the top of the tower while air is blown in from the bottom. An example of this type of unit is shown in Figure 1. Channeling or short circuiting of the aqueous stream is minimized by... [Pg.159]

In the past few years many changes have occurred in the packaging materials utilized for distilled spirits. Traditionally, distilled spirits have been packed primarily in glass containers of approved ATF sizes. Over the last 5—10 years, plastic containers, primarily poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), have been utilized by increasing numbers of distillers. Because of environmental concerns, the last two years have seen a change back to glass on some of these package sizes. However, the 50 mL miniature bottie continues to be primarily packed in PET plastic containers. [Pg.89]

Polyolefins with branched side chains other than P4MP1 have been prepared Figure 11.14). Because of their increased cohesive energy, ability for the molecules to pack and the effect of increasing chain stiffness some of these polymers have very high melting points. For example, poly-(3-methylbut-l-ene) melts at about 240°C and poly-(4,4-dimethylpent-l-ene) is reported to have a melting point of between 300 C and 350°C. Certain cyclic side chains can also... [Pg.274]

Although poly(vinyl fluoride) resembles PVC in its low water absorption, resistance to hydrolysis, insolubility in common solvents at room temperature and a tendency to split off hydrogen halides at elevated temperatures, it has a much greater tendency to crystallise. This is because the fluorine atom (c.f. the chlorine atom) is sufficiently small to allow molecules to pack in the same way as polythene. [Pg.376]

The amorphous polyesters are becoming increasingly important for one-component 100% solid moisture-curing adhesives. These materials are usually viscous, amorphous liquids. Poly(2-methylpropane adipate), an example of an amorphous polyester, is a liquid even at a molecular weight of 2000. The amorphous polyesters are usually asymmetrical in structure. In the poly(2-methylpropane adipate) example, the pendant methyl group would be expected to interfere with chain packing, thereby preventing crystallization [27]. [Pg.770]

The two structures appear very similar. Poly( 1,2-propylene adipate) has the same basic structure as poly(ethylene adipate), except for a pendant methyl group. This pendant methyl group on the poly( 1,2-propylene adipate) makes a large difference, however. Poly( 1,2-propylene adipate) has no crystalline melting point. Trappe theorizes that the pendant methyl prevents chain packing and therefore, prevents crystallization [42]. [Pg.778]

TSK-GEL H type columns are for gel-permeation chromatography (GPC) in organic solvents. They are packed with porous poly(styrene-divinylbenzene) resins that have a high degree of cross-linking. [Pg.135]
