A second type of control required is that of the package or pallet itself as it is handled by conveyors and other equipment. This handling may consist of right-angle transfers in a vertical lift or of a set of restrainers on the sides of a belt conveyor. 

In addition to grain handling, cleaning rolls, sifters, purifiers, conveyors, as well as storing, packaging operations are involved. 

Spiral-Conveyor Devices Figure 11-60 illustrates the major adaptations of this widely used class of material-handling equipment to indirect heat-transfer purposes. These conveyors can be considered for heat-transfer purposes as continuously agitated kettles. The adaptation of Fig. ll-60cf offers a batch-operated version for evaporation duty. For this service, all are package-priced and package-shipped items requiring few, if any, amdliaries. 

Using the non-palletised methods and depalletising to optimise transit vehicle space, warehouse space, etc. substantially increases manual handling. This can be reduced by the use of mechanical transfer systems (lifts, hoists, chutes, roller conveyors, etc.). Placing loads directly onto the floor in warehouses, vehicles, etc. is not recommended for pharmaceutical products. It is therefore advisable to try to raise the packaging off the floor by the use of boards, duck boards, hardboard, slip pallets, slip sheets, etc., but these may cause other problems. 

For the transportation of bulk materials over paths that may vary anywhere from horizontal to vertical, buckets supported on chains and rollers are often used. Because of the flexibility of the bucket conveyor, both in path and in bucket material, this conveyor is particularly adapted to the handling of abrasive and otherwise difficult materials. Roller conveyors are used when gravity can supply the motive power or for those vhich are driven and used for the transportation of boxes, packages, etc. 

Load Characteristics. These include maximum and minimum sizes of loads and the shapes and carrying surfaces of all units. The suitabihty of a load configuration to be handled on roller or wheel conveyor is important. Unsupported packages such as bags (Fig. 4.16) are not recommended for this type of equipment. 

Sliding Chain Conveyors. These are the simplest type since they use the chain itself to convey packages down two shding tracks. The conveyors are used to handle heavier loads than can belt conveyors, such as loaded pallets or unitized loads, but they have the same inchne hmitations as belt and powered-roUer conveyors. 

Transportation and handling of the packaged waste at the incineration facility shall be done with suitable equipment, for example cranes, fork lifts and roller conveyors. On-site transportation containers shall meet all the conditions necessary to prevent radioactive contamination of the area and the operating personnel.
