Patients with an anterior MI who require permanent pacing often have a low LV ejection fraction that makes them potential candidates for a prophylactic implantable cardioverter-defibriUator. A recent study in patients who suffered an acute MI suggests waiting 3-6 months before implanting a defibrillator (32). Despite this recommendation, it makes sense to implant a cardioverter-defibrillator (which contains a pacemaker component) in patients who actually require only a permanent pacemaker at that juncture. Such patients are also at risk for sudden death from a ventricular tachyarrhythmia. It makes no sense to wait 3-6 months without protection for bradycardia until a cardioverter-defibrillator can be implanted on the basis of a poor LV ejection fraction according to the DINAMIT trial (32). [Pg.421]

Li2S204 being the SEI component at the Li anode and the solid discharge product at the carbon cathode. The Li—SOCI2 and Li—SO2 systems have excellent operational characteristics in a temperature range from —40 to 60 °C (SOCI2) or 80 °C (SO2). Typical applications are military, security, transponder, and car electronics. Primary lithium cells have also various medical uses. The lithium—silver—vanadium oxide system finds application in heart defibrillators. The lithium—iodine system with a lithium iodide solid electrolyte is the preferred pacemaker cell. [Pg.18]

However, there is an apparently important difference between SCN and non-SCN rhythms in vitro-. SCN explants remain rhythmic while other regions of the brain and peripheral tissues damp after a minimum of two, but a maximum of about 15 cycles (Fig. 1). The robustness and persistence of the rhythmicity depends on the tissue and does vary in individual cultures. It has been assumed from results like these that the SCN is a self-sustained pacemaker while peripheral clocks are damped oscillators, but it cannot be excluded that in isolated peripheral tissues, I erl may damp despite the persistent rhythmicity of other clock components or that the cultures lack some factor continuously present in vivo that is required for sustained rhythmicity of non-SCN tissue. [Pg.113]

As noted earlier, an effective assay of the cognitive impact of sleep loss should be sensitive to the homeostatic drive for sleep in interaction with the endogenous circadian pacemaker (33,58). From Figure 3, it is evident that the PVT fulfills this requirement, with performance during 88 hr of sleep deprivation demonstrating both a monotonic component to impairment, which increases with increasing time awake, and a rhythmic oscillation in performance, which fluctuates in daily cycles. [Pg.55]

The heart is mediated by an electrical system that is easily disturbed by toxicants changing the timing, flow, and magnitude of the electrical pulses and thus interfering with the required pumping action. The activity of the heart is myogenic, i.e. the activity is initiated by the heart itself Various components of the heart, the sinoatrial (SA) node, atrioventricular (AV) node, and the Purkinje fibers are capable of pacemaker activity. Healthy atrial and ventricular tissue does not engage in pacemaker activity. The primary pacemaker is the SA node, but in diseased or affected states the secondary pacemakers take over. [Pg.493]

Nonthermal effects may result from the possible interactions between RF fields and the various components of the biological material. Established effects include (1) The interference of radio frequencies with cardiac pacemakers is possible, however, new models of pacemakers are currently equipped with electronic filters making them immune to fields from... [Pg.967]

That does not exhaust it. On the side of mechanics, the future of IT in everyday life potentially also includes biorobotics (recall that robotics is a current industry term that first appeared in the science fiction novels of Isaac Asimov), and hence more subtle forms of half robotics that mean enhancive replacements of ailing human parts. For many years patients have already been able to have artificial replacement materials, pins, joints, various prosthetics, pacemakers, and artificial hearts. They have also received transplantations and insertions made of natural materials. This trend will doubtless continue to chips and robotic components to restore lost and damaged physiological, neurological and biochemical functions. [Pg.480]
