Oxygen studies

The interaction of small, well defined, rhodium clusters, Rh and Rhs, with O2 has been investigated (220) by matrix infrared, and UV-visible, spectroscopy, coupled with metal/02 concentration studies, warm-up experiments, and isotopic oxygen studies. A number of binuclear O2 complexes were identified, with stoichiometries Rh2(02)n, n = 1-4. In addition, a trinuclear species Rhs(02)m, m = 2 or 6, was identified. The infrared data for these complexes, as well as for the mononuclear complexes Rh(02)x, = 1-2 (229), are summarized in Table XI. Metal-concentration plots that led to the determination of... [Pg.118]

It was presumed that the more flexible (CH2) linker and the absence of an obvious position for electrophilic attack such as is found in system Cu2(R-XYL-H)]2+, as seen in Figure 5.14, would lead to more rapid oxygenation reactions and a more stable complex than that formed from [Cu2(R-XYL-H)]2+. Instead the researchers found a more complex system in kinetically controlled oxygenation studies. Two different peroxo complexes form via a postulated open-chain superoxo species as shown in the scheme shown in Figure 5.17.41a... [Pg.221]

Devins (18) assumed that the ozonizer discharges in oxygen studied by him may be regarded as similar to the more or less ideal plasma of the uniform positive column of a glow discharge because, in other experiments, Manley (52) found that, at atmospheric pressure, X/p is nearly independent of the alternating potential applied to the electrodes. [Pg.289]

Large quantities of dichlorodifluoromethane and other chlorofluorocarbons ( Freons ) are used as aerosol propellants, and it has been calculated that there is a danger of reducing the earth s protective ozone layer following photolysis to produce chlorine atoms in the upper atmosphere.184 Milstein and Rowland185 have now measured quantum yields of unity for CF2C12 dissociation [reaction (36)] and for appearance of photo-oxidation products in oxygen. A mechanistic similarity is suggested. Now the value of E° for the couple H0o -02 is between 0.1 and 0.55 (19, 38), so that the reaction of the metal ions with oxygen studied here is unlikely to proceed via HO > for thermodynamic reasons. However, the autoxidation of the metal and reduction of oxygen may well occur via the formation of a complex, such as Fe02 ... [Pg.272]

On the basis of photo-oxygenation studies of certain carotenoids and the synthesis of optically active ethyl abscisate, the absolute configuration of (-1- )-abscisic acid has been revised to S and is therefore defined by structure (40).
