To refine potential Olivella source zones to more specific sections of the coastline, we have employed two different archaeometric techniques, including determination of elemental composition by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and the use of carbon and oxygen stable isotopes using an isotope ratio-mass spectrometer (IR-MS) (38). Each of these techniques is described below, and the final section evaluates and compares their utility in sourcing Olivella shell beads. 

The measured carbon and oxygen stable isotopic ratios of calcites are given in Table 1. Bol and Pflieger [76] report on research where the carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur isotope values of human and animal hair were analyzed. The dietary status and origin of the individual subjects could generally be confirmed based on the measured isotope values. Bell et al. [77] discuss the use of oxygen stable isotopes in tooth enamel to demonstrate human migrations. 

Silva et al. [122] discuss the source identification of nitrate contamination in the urban environment utilizing nitrogen and oxygen stable isotopes in conjunction with hydrologic data and water chemistry. The authors reported that the isotopes of nitrate permitted differentiation between sewage nitrates and other sources of nitrate (e.g., fertilizers).
