Three 1 litre baffled flasks, each containing 100 ml medium, are inoculated with cells from one agar plate suspended in 10 ml saline and incubated at 30°C on a rotary shaker (for optimum supply of oxygen). This provides sufficient biomass to inoculate the bioreactor.

Both biochemical oxygen demand and chemical oxygen demand are measurements frequently made in water laboratories. Both of these methods are subject to interference when applied to saline samples, as is discussed in the concluding section in this chapter. 

The infectious titers of influenza vims were determined in the irradiated specimen at different time points. The kinetics of the vims activity in saline and allantoic fluid in the presence of fullerene and oxygen are presented in Fig. 5.1. 

Units and methods are developed to study the effect of active forms of oxygen on fullerene-based photosensitizers. The kinetics of the inactivation of influenza vims in saline and allantoic fluid during the course of photodynamic treatment using fullerene preparations is studied. Fulvic acid was isolated in Big Soda Lake above and below the chem-ocline, which occurs at 34-m depth. Water near the lake surface has moderate salinity and is oxygenated, whereas water below the chemocline is hypersaline and anoxic (17). In spite of these environmental differences the chemical character of the fulvic acid from above or below the chemocline did not vary, as determined by elemental analyses and NMR spectrometry. 

Figure 2 illustrates corrosion behavior and oxygen solubility as a function of the salinity of the solution at a fixed temperature. It is to be noted that a small variation in salinity in the neighborhood of the normal 3.5% content of sea water has no effect on oxygen solubility and little effect on corrosion rate.
