Oxygen microorganism metabolism

Aerotolerants, which are anaerobes that are not affected by the presence of oxygen. This means that if these anaerobic microorganisms are exposed to oxygen, their metabolism will not be, literally, destroyed by oxygen, and they can still perform their functions. SRB, for example, are not aerotolerant. [Pg.56]

The microorganisms consume oxygen in an aerobic process while metabolizing the organic matter present in the sample. In order to understand the function of the miniaturized device, we may assume that the medium is homogeneous. The process can be explained in two steps At first, bacteria reach an uptake equilibrium with organic matter present in the sample (Eq. 2.2). Then, in a second step they will consume oxygen to metabolize that matter into CO2 and water (Eq. 2.3) ... [Pg.30]

More energy is derived by microorganisms from the aerobic metabolism of MTBE and other fuel oxygenates consequently, MTBE degrading cultures grow more quickly under aerobic conditions. [Pg.1017]

Azo dye-containing wastewaters seems to be one of the most polluted wastewaters, which require efficient decolorization and subsequent aromatic amine metabolism. On the basis of the available literature, it can be concluded that anaerobic-aerobic SBR operations are quite convenient for the complete biodegradation of both azo dyes and their breakdown products. Nevertheless, like the other methods used for biological treatment, SBRs treating colored wastewaters have some limitations. Presence of forceful alternative electron acceptors such as nitrate and oxygen, availability of an electron donor, microorganisms, and cycle times of anaerobic and aerobic reaction phases can be evaluated as quite significant. [Pg.69]
