Oxygen, Liquefied Safety goggles or faces shield, insulated gloves, long sleeves, trousers worn outside boots or over high-top shoes to shed spilled liquid. In all but the most severe cases (pneumonia) recovery is rapid after reduction of oxygen pressure. Supportive treatment should include immediate sedation, anticonvulsive therapy if needed and rest. Treat frostbite. Soak in lukewarm water. Treat frostbite burns. [Pg.342]

Many older finishes can be removed with single solvents or blends of petroleum solvents and oxygenates. Varnish can be removed with mineral spirits, shellac can be stripped with alcohols, and lacquers can be removed with blends of acetates and alcohols (lacquer thinners). The removal mechanism is one of dissolving the coating, then washing the surface or wiping away the finish. This method is often used to reamalgamate or liquefy old finishes on antique items of furniture. [Pg.551]

Every gas has a critical temperature above which it cannot be liquefied by application of pressure alone (Chapter 4). As a result, gases used, e.g., as an inert medium to reduce oxygen content of atmospheres containing flammable gas or vapour (Chapter 6) are often shipped and stored as cryogenic liquid for convenience and economy. [Pg.258]

A further hazard exists when eompressed air jets are used to elean maehine eomponents in workplaees flying partieles have eaused injury and blindness. Cylinders may fail if over-pressurized or weakened by the applieation of heat. Liquefied gases, e.g. butane or propane, respond more rapidly to heat than the permanent gases sueh as nitrogen or oxygen. Cylinders are normally proteeted by pressure relief valves, fusible plugs or bursting dises. [Pg.265]

Use compatible pipe fittings. (Flammable gas cylinders have valves with left-hand threads cylinders for oxygen and nonflammable gases, except occasionally helium, have valves with right-hand threads. Certain liquefied gas cylinders have two supply lines, one for gas and one for liquid, dependent on cylinder position.)... [Pg.273]

Many suppliers of liquefied gases state that they use different hose connections for liquid oxygen and liquid nitrogen so mistakes cannot arise. However, mistakes have occurred, possibly because of the well-known tendency of operators to acquire adaptors. [Pg.269]

On May 30, 1970, a tank truck partially filled with liquefied oxygen exploded after making a delivery in a hospital in Brooklyn, New York. The force of the explosion and subsequent fires caused the deaths of the driver and bystander. Thirty other people were injured and substantial property damage resulted. [Pg.29]

Oxygen first liquefied by L. Cailletet and R. Pictet (independently). [Pg.601]

During the liquefaction process, usually much of the oxygen, carbon dioxide, sulfur compounds and water are removed so that liquefied natural gas (LNG) IS nearly 100 percent methane. LNG takes up one-six-hundredth the volume of natural gas, with a density less than half that of water. [Pg.832]

A gas is liquefied by going to low temperatures and/or high pressures. Moreover as you can see from Table 5.2, carbon dioxide is much easier to liquefy than oxygen. [Pg.123]
