Holm and coworkers found that thiolates, amidates and oximates were most effective at making higher nickel oxidation states accessible (25), However, the studies noted in the previous section showed that in O2 reactions of their Ni(II) complexes, amidates and thiolates were themselves readily oxidized in a manner that precludes catalysis. Oximates have been shown to support stable nickel complexes in both the Ni(III) and Ni(IV) oxidation states (26-28), They also lack the a- and P-hydrogen atoms that are most prone to oxidative abstraction by high valent metals, thereby additionally satisfying the second design criterion. [Pg.136]

The calculated values are those obtained by assuming the ratedetermining step to be abstraction of an allylic hydrogen with an isotope effect equal to the discrimination effect obtained from the retention of deuterium in the products. The observed kinetic isotope effects show clearly that this first abstraction is the slow step. The good agreement with the discrimination values gives excellent confirmation for the stepwise mechanistic scheme proposed. In the tracer experiments using deuterium it was found that appreciable propylene isomerization occurred unless ammonia was present. The oxidation rate was unaffected by the ammonia. This was taken to indicate that the initial oxidative abstraction reaction had no carbonium ion characteristic. However, this conclusion does not apply in the case of cuprous oxide, where ammonia very severely inhibited the oxidation reaction. [Pg.192]

A typical synthesis of poly(pyrazolyl)borate alkylidyne complexes involves displacement of labile ligands from pre-existing alkylidynes prepared according to the classic oxide-abstraction Fischer preparation (Scheme 2), which has been developed by Mayr and co-workers into an efficient approach to Group 6 alkylidynes. [Pg.4]

We find that the oxide abstraction approach also works well for aminomethylidyne complexes of chromium, molybdenum and tungsten providing the complexes [M(sCNiPr2)(02CCF3)(C0)3(PPh3)] (M = Cr, Mo, W) in high yield (Scheme 4). [Pg.242]

MtX " is any one of the special non-coordinating anions. Irradiation produces mixtures of cation radicals, cations, and radicals of the aryl groups, which are extremely reactive species. These compounds oxidize, abstract hydrogen atoms, or abstract hydrides from most monomers or the polymer backbone (RH). The resulting cationic monomers or polymers lose a proton to form unsaturated positions, yielding the HMtX acid that initiates polymerization, cross-linking, or deprotection. [Pg.269]

Metal oxides, usually zinc oxide but on occasion lead oxide for improved water resistance, are used as crosslinking agents for halogenated elastomers such as neoprene, halobutyl rubber, and chlorosulfonated polyethylene. The metal oxide abstracts the allylic halogen of adjacent polymer chains to form an oxygen crosslink plus the metal chloride salt. [Pg.221]
