Overview of the technique

PC may be described as the technique for the separation of substances using paper (a mat of cellulose fibres) as the chromatographic sorbent with a liquid mobile phase. The forces retarding the components and preventing them being located at the solvent front derive from the special physical/chemical or structural properties of the paper used as chromatographic medium, and are in part due to partition, adsorption and ion exchange sorption phenomena.
