Ovalbumin, immune response

In the additional functional (TIER-2) studies the immune system is more thoroughly investigated, while the animals are exposed to one or more doses of xenobiotics. Immune responses to several different types of antigens may be determined, including Tcell-dependent antigens like tetanus toxoid and ovalbumin, sheep red blood cells (SRBC) [38—41] and T cell-independent antigens like EPS [38,... [Pg.445]

Figure 273 Cationized BSA even can increase the specific antibody response to large proteins coupled to it. This graph shows a comparison of the relative antibody response in mice to injections of ovalbumin, either in an unconjugated form or conjugated to native or cationized BSA. The quantity injected was standardized according to the amount of ovalbumin present. The highly basic cBSA molecule modulates the immune response to enhance the production of antibodies toward even proteins conjugated with it. Chitosan microparficles provide a pofenfial system for oral vaccination. While oral vaccinations would cost less and be more comfortable than traditional injections, antigen degradation in the acidic stomach environment and unpredictable immune response at Peyer s patches render them inefficient. However, vaccines delivered in biodegradable microspheres can weather the harsh gastrointestinal environment and be phagocytized by Peyer s patch cells. Wan der Lubben et al. demonstrated that chitosan microspheres loaded with FITC labeled ovalbumin relayed their antigens to Peyer s patches. Stained intestinal epithelium showed high uptake of loaded microspheres, while pure administered FITC-ovalbumin indicated no uptake. [Pg.82]
