Other Methods of Analysis

The differential rate equations of a complex reaetion, expressing rates as functions of concentrations, are usually simpler in form than are the corresponding integrated equations, whieh express concentrations as funetions of time moreover, it is always possible to write down the differential rate equations for a postulated kinetie seheme, whereas it may be difficult or impossible to integrate them. Of course, we usually measure concentration as a funetion of time. If, however, we can measure rates, we may use the differential equations directly. 

Consider Seheme XII, consisting of parallel first-order and second-order reactions (e.g., concurrent SnI and Sn2 reactions). 

if Ca and Cb can both be measured as functions of time, a plot of v/ca vs. Cb allows the rate constants to be estimated. (If it is known that B is also consumed in the first-order reaction, mass balance allows cb to be easily expressed in terms of Ca-) The rate v(Ca) is the tangent to the curve Ca = f(t) at concentration Ca-This can be determined graphically, analytically, or with computer processing of the concentration-time data. Mata-Perez and Perez-Benito show an example of this treatment for parallel uncatalyzed and autocatalyzed reactions. 

Other collection and analytical methods for soil-gas measurement involve the use of a portable mass spectrometer and the use of trained dogs (Kahma et al., 1975). Analytical methods for sulphur gases are summarised in Table 8-111.

A statistical analysis allows us to determine whether our results are significantly different from known values, or from values obtained by other analysts, by other methods of analysis, or for other samples. Electrochemical methods are of importance in their own right for direct chemical analyses but in addition, in a number of cases, they are ancillary to other methods of analysis (e.g., the titration of solutions). 

Quest Diagnostics have established a routine system for testosterone, which has now replaced their other methods of analysis (Goldman et al., poster, US Endocrine Society meeting, San Diego, 2005). The analysis is carried out on a Thermofinnigan TSQ Quantum Ultra operated with an APCI source in the positive-ion mode. They use two transitions, 289—>109 and 289—>97, for the analyte and 294—>112 and 294—> 99 for the 2H5-labeled internal standard. On-line extraction and short retention times allow them to assay several thousand samples per month per instrument, making it cost-effective in spite of the high cost of instrumentation.

After absorption, the energy can relax by emission of photons (Fig. 11.3) or by non-radiative transitions. The most frequent radiative transitions include phosphorescence and fluorescence. These are the basis of other methods of analysis that will be discussed in Chapter 12. 

In 1983 the sculpture Getty Kouros was offered to the J. Paul Getty museum in Malibu, California. To this day, the sculpture s authenticity remains uncertain. Research the methods that have been used to establish the authenticity of the statue. Suggest other methods of analysis that might be used to find out if the Kouros is a 530 B.C. sculpture or a modern forgery. 

The official European Community (EC) method for determination of the purity of milk fat is based on triglyceride composition as determined by GC on a packed column (EC, 1999). This is based on a formula for the composition of genuine milk fat of the type 100 = 14.197 C40 — 36.396 C42 + 32.364 C44 — e. The limit of detection varies with the adulterant fat, but is usually <5% foreign fat. A standard reference material (CRM 519) is available (Precht el al., 1998) which has been fully characterized and the triglyceride composition determined collaboratively. Other methods of analysis of the triglyceride data have been evaluated (Collomb et al., 1998a,b Lipp, 1996a,b Ulberth, 1995). 

First experiments indicate that a direct determination of trace elements in oxide substances is possible but the determination of matrix elements, because of their high concentrations, should however be left to other methods of analysis, such as solution analysis with AAS or direct X-ray fluorescence spectrometry. 

A certain amount of specialized training will be required for other methods of analysis. Proper understanding of immunology and serology would be required of the senior investigator to interpret the results properly, but this requirement is no more of an imposition or deterrent for these techniques than it is for other methods of analysis. 

Atomic absorption, optical emission and atomic fluorescence as well as plasma mass spectrometry and new approaches such as laser enhanced ionization now represent strong tools for elemental analysis including speciation and are found in many analytical laboratories. Their power of detection, reliability in terms of systematic errors and their costs reflecting the economic aspects should be compared with those of other methods of analysis, when it comes to the development of strategies for solving analytical problems (Table 20). 

There are other methods of analysis of NMR of glassy solids such as the broad line or continuous wave NMR particularly valuable for quadurpolar nuclei like "B. In Figure 4.16, broad line NMR spectrum of B in B2O3 glass is presented along with the MAS NMR to illustrate the effect of spinning on the widths of resonance peaks. Determination of the fibre type, including checking of the stated fibre type, is one of the most important preliminary tests. If no IR spectrometer is available, standard fibres can be most readily identified using the characteristic reactions according to Stratmann. For modified fibres or high-performance and speciality fibres the more complicated classification on the basis of solubility groups and their subdivisions or other methods of analysis have to be used. 

Other methods of analysis used include molecular properties, such as partial charged surface area (PSA) and study of the effects of hydrogen bonding on drug absorption. 

The spectrophotometric methods for determining Fe in natural waters have been compared with other methods of analysis [ 180]. 

The other method of analysis of repository safety is concerned with degradation processes that can occur and persist over long time periods. One of the most familiar examples of such degradation is corrosion. On a geologic time scale, an ice age might produce events and processes that lead to long-term degradation.
