Other Factors Influencing Performance

The engineering properties of soils used for embankments, such as their shear strength and compressibility, are influenced by the amount of compaction they have undergone. Accordingly, the desired amount of compaction is established in relation to the engineering properties required for the embankment to perform its design function. A specification for compaction needs to indicate the type of compaction equipment to be used, its mass, speed and travel, and any other factors influencing performance such as frequency of vibration, thickness of layers to be compacted and number of passes of the compactor (Table 9.8).

Other factors influence the magnitude of the effect of exposure misclassification on estimates of association between exposures and disease. The effect depends not only on the extent of exposure misclassification, but also on the prevalence of exposure in the population studied. Since pesticide exposure prevalence may differ in different populations and is certainly different in general population stndies when compared to studies in farming communities, the performance of exposnre assessment techniques will vary according to the study context. The specificity determines the bias in risk-ratio situations with a low exposure prevalence. Thus, a poor sensitivity, for instance, the one reported by Arbuckle et al. (2002) for 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), may not be problematic in a general population or case-control study, as long as the specificity is sufficiently high. 

The simulation is performed at the strategic level and other factors influencing sourcing costs and delivery time are disregarded. 

There are materials with low or no permeability to different environments or products. Barrier plastics are used with their technology not becoming more complex but more precise. Different factors influence performance such as being pinhole-fi ee chemical composition, crosslinking, modification, molecular orientation density, and thickness. The coextrusion and coinjection processes are used to reduce permeability while retaining other desirable properties. Total protection against vapor transmission by a single barrier material increases linearly... 

Measurement of performance. Quality Management requires that measures of performance be established for every activity. These measures include end-of-pipe measurement, such as amounts of material released into the environment or injury rates, and in-process measures of how efficiently you are managing, such as time to review safety improvement proposals or total resources expended on PSM. Each team should be required to identify potential performance measures for the processes they are developing and the activities these processes manage. Many of the end-of-pipe measures will already exist these should be critically examined to ensure that they truly measure performance and are not unduly influenced by other factors. For example, the number of accidents in a fleet of road vehicles is almost directly dependent on the number of miles driven with no improvement in performance, a reduction in miles driven would reduce the number of accidents.
