Orientation behavior

Further improvements in the properties of PAN-based carbon fibers are likely to emerge through improved stabilization, that is, by creating the ideally cross-linked fiber. On the other hand, as purer pitch precursors become available, further improvements in mesophase pitch-based carbon fibers are likely to arise from optimized spinnerette designs and enhanced understanding of the relationship between pitch chemistry and its flow/orientation behavior. Of course, the development of new precursors offers the potential to form carbon fibers with a balance of properties ideal for a given application. [Pg.135]

An inference of fundamental importance follows from Eqs. (2.3.9) and (2.3.11) When long axes of nonpolar molecules deviate from the surface-normal direction slightly enough, their azimuthal orientational behavior is accounted for by much the same Hamiltonian as that for a two-dimensional dipole system. Indeed, at sin<9 1 the main nonlocal contribution to Eq. (2.3.9) is provided by a term quadratic in which contains the interaction tensor V 2 (r) of much the same structure as dipole-dipole interaction tensor 2B3 > 0, B4 < 0, only differing in values 2B3 and B4. For dipole-dipole interactions, 2B3 = D = flic (p is the dipole moment) and B4 = -3D, whereas, e.g., purely quadrupole-quadrupole interactions are characterized by 2B3 = 3U, B4 = - SU (see Table 2.2). Evidently, it is for this reason that the dipole model applied to the system CO/NaCl(100), with rather small values 0(6 25°), provided an adequate picture for the ground-state orientational structure.81 A contradiction arose only in the estimation of the temperature Tc of the observed orientational phase transition For the experimental value Tc = 25 K to be reproduced, the dipole moment should have been set n = 1.3D, which is ten times as large as the corresponding value n in a gas phase. Section 2.4 will be devoted to a detailed consideration of orientational states and excitation spectra of a model system on a square lattice described by relations (2.3.9)-(2.3.11). [Pg.31]

Two questions arise from this result. Do lobsters use only chemical and not mechanosensory information, and why do lobsters not use ground reference and head up-current Since turbulent odor dispersal is based on water flow patterns, we must investigate the role of microflow patterns in plume orientation behavior. As for ground reference, we speculate that the flow patterns of the lobster s natural environment may be too complex to allow for efficient rheotactic behavior in odor source localization. This complexity is most likely caused by a mismatch between turbulent scales and animal body size and sampling scales. [Pg.162]

Choice-oriented behavior is not the same as rational behavior. By the former, I simply mean behavior that is sensitive to rewards and punishments. By the latter, I mean behavior that fits into a complex pattern of optimization The behavior must be optimal, given the desires and... [Pg.259]

In addition to their role in orientation behavior, the periplanones may participate in reproductive isolation among sympatric Periplaneta species. Periplanone-A from P. americana attracts Periplaneta australasiae. Periplanone-B, and possibly some other components, inhibits attraction of male P australasiae (Seelinger, 1985b). Two other periplanones, periplanone-C (3 Table 6.2) and periplanone-D (4 Table 6.2), have been isolated from P. americana (Biendl et al, 1989 Takahashi et al,... [Pg.192]

PPO and then remains constant while the PPO chains does not exhibit orientational behavior which depends on the concentration. These results are explained in terms of the different relaxation behavior of the two types of chains. [Pg.133]

Deuterium NMR is very sensitive to orientational behavior and order there are a number of papers dealing with constrained polymeric networks. For example, 2H NMR (in both, solid state and solution) is used in the study of the orientational order generated in uniaxially strained rubbers as a function of the crosslink density. Two sets of rubbers (model end-linked silicone rubbers and randomly crosslinked diene networks) were investigated directly (on perdeuterated silicone labelled chains) and indirectly, via C6D6 as an NMR probe for diene rubbers 45). [Pg.18]

The categories of methods used in behavioral toxicology fall into two principal classes, stimulus-oriented behavior, and internally generated behavior. The former includes two types of conditioned behavior operant conditioning, in which animals are trained to perform a task in order to obtain a reward or to avoid a punishment, and classical conditioning, in which an animal learns to associate a conditioning stimulus with a reflex action. Stimulus-oriented behavior also involves unconditioned responses in which the animal s response to a particular stimulus is recorded. [Pg.383]

Based on the results of two amorphous compatible blend systems of 50/50 NC/PCL and 75/25 PVC/PCL, the following conclusion can be drawn. Compatible amorphous blend constituents show identical segmental orientation behavior, indicating good mixing at the molecular level. Thus, an amorphous compatible blend can exhibit the characteristics of a single homopolymer not only in its glass-transition behavior and mechanical properties but also in the uniform way in which the polymer chains orient. [Pg.516]
