Organosolv pulping, wood

This study reports the first application of universal calibration via HPSEC-DV to four acetylated hardwood lignins obtained from aspen (Pop-ulus tremuloides) wood meal by ball milling and solvent extraction steam explosion followed by alkaline extraction organosolv pulping followed by water extraction of the associated sugars and dilute sulfuric acid hydrolysis followed by sodium hydroxide extraction. 

A demonstration plant, producing 15 metric tons of organosolv pulp a day, was constructed in New Brunswick, Ontario. A comparison of the strength properties of Alcell and kraft pulps is given in Table 28.5. The process as described above is only suitable for hard-woods.8,22...

An area not treated in detail and covered only in Norman Lewis s review (and one that deserves attention in the future) is the use of hydrolysis and organosolve lignins in wood adhesives. Should wood pulp production by steam explosion or organosolve pulping become more significant commercial processes, more attention will certainly be directed to these lignins.

Sulfur free lignin, derived from the methanol based organosolve pulping of spruce wood as well as from beech wood prehydrolysis, has been proposed as a filler for polypropylene films [177].
