Organoiridiums

Although addition of organoiridium compounds to carbonyls and CN multiple bonds has been little investigated in comparison with those of organorhodium compounds, several characteristic reactions have been disclosed recently. 

We, the editors, believe that organoiridium chemistry has not only a rich past, but that the application of iridium complexes in organic transformations also has a brilliant future ...

As well as the cylindrical symmetry inherent in the above molecule, various clusters having spherical symmetry have also been formulated and can be nomenclated using spherical nomenclature. Results from studies on organoiridium compounds have made significant contributions in the area of catalysis. In some transformations, organometallic iridium compounds are the most active catalysts available. In others, where iridium may not yield the most active catalysts, iridium complexes nevertheless yield important information about the stmcture and reactivity of important catalytic intermediates. The following sections attempt to briefly cover some of the most important homogeneous catalytic process where iridium chemistry has had some impact.

This chapter will not deal with iridium complexes in which the coordination chemistry of the iridium-carbon bond is implicated inasmuch as Leigh and Richards have very recently (1982) provided an excellent detailed review on such compounds organoiridium and iridium carbonyP complexes were also previously reviewed. Iridium complex chemistry has been reviewed (1980) along with rhodium, and in annual reviews. Additionally, iridium complexes have been treated in Comprehensive Inorganic Chemistry . ...
