Organoiridium compounds

Although addition of organoiridium compounds to carbonyls and CN multiple bonds has been little investigated in comparison with those of organorhodium compounds, several characteristic reactions have been disclosed recently. 

Results from studies on organoiridium compounds have made significant contributions in the area of catalysis. In some transformations, organometallic iridium compounds are the most active catalysts available. In others, where iridium may not yield the most active catalysts, iridium complexes nevertheless yield important information about the stmcture and reactivity of important catalytic intermediates. The following sections attempt to briefly cover some of the most important homogeneous catalytic process where iridium chemistry has had some impact. 

In the following sections, general classes of organoiridium compounds will be discussed followed by brief reviews of some important types of reactions involving organoiridium compounds.

This chapter will not deal with iridium complexes in which the coordination chemistry of the iridium-carbon bond is implicated inasmuch as Leigh and Richards have very recently (1982) provided an excellent detailed review on such compounds organoiridium and iridium carbonyP complexes were also previously reviewed.
