While polar functional groups in molecule i (positive W values) lead to a decrease in the K value, the nonpolar organic molecule structure acts to increase the value due to its repulsive effect on the polar water (high activity coefficient value of n-alkanes). Structure 1 represents an organic molecule. Structures 2,3, and 4 represent three different isomers of the first molecule. Study each of these three structures to determine how they are related to Structure 1.

There are five principal forms of isomerism related to the spatial arrangement of atoms in organic molecules structural, positional, geometrical, conformational and stereo. 

Isomers are molecules which have the same empirical formulae, i.e. they have the same total composition in terms of constituent atoms, but are different in the way the atoms are bonded together or arranged in space. In this chapter we will ignore functional isomers (e.g. allylic alcohol versus aldehyde) and tautomers (e.g. ketone versus enol) and will concentrate on those forms of isomerism relating to the spatial arrangement of atoms.
