COLORED COATING WITH ORGANIC DYES AND PIGMENTS... 

Owing to the simphcity and versatility of surface-initiated ATRP, the above-mentioned AuNP work may be extended to other particles for their two- or three-dimensionally ordered assemblies with a wide controllabiUty of lattice parameters. In fact, a dispersion of monodisperse SiPs coated with high-density PMMA brushes showed an iridescent color, in organic solvents (e.g., toluene), suggesting the formation of a colloidal crystal [108]. To clarify this phenomenon, the direct observation of the concentrated dispersion of a rhodamine-labeled SiP coated with a high-density polymer brush was carried out by confocal laser scanning microscopy. As shown in Fig. 23, the experiment revealed that the hybrid particles formed a wide range of three-dimensional array with a periodic structure. This will open up a new route to the fabrication of colloidal crystals. 

A totally different method is being used if the aluminum pigments are coated with colored metal oxides. By this method very heat resistant, colored metallic pigments can be produced of various shades depending on the applied metal oxide. These shades are less intense and less brilliant [8] if compared to aluminum pigments colored with organic colorants [9].

Inspection of the particles trapped on the filters revealed numerous fibers in a wide range of colors and lengths. Some fibers were coated with what appeared to be dark brown-black organic matter, and others were ensnared in clumps of inorganic particles and organic matter. Individual pieces of organic matter ranged from a few microns to 50... 

Fillers, stabilisers and colorants can be inorganic or organic, and are added as part of identification, stability and durability, they must be non-leaching and meet health requirements. Some plastics products are required to keep moisture and air out of sensitive products and these are usually high-density plastics with low permeation properties. Some products require plastics with high permeability to allow air (oxygen) as part of product stability, e.g. anaerobic adhesives. Healthcare products require that some containers do not allow air or moisture to permeate the surfaces (bacteria or other micro-organisms) and in some extreme cases may require that the inside be coated with an inner layer of approved lacquer or other very low permeable material.
