Ordered sequences, permutations

At the energy level t3 there are gt ways to start any sequence - one particle for each of the g3 states. In each of these sequences the remaining Ni — 1 particles can be arranged in any order, or permutation of (gi+N3 — 1) objects. The number of ways in which N3 particles can be arranged is gi(g3 -i- — 1) . [Pg.469]

This model is a polar cross-/ structure with a left-handed twist that complies with the mass-per-unit-length data moreover, it readily accommodates sequence randomization because like residues are still stacked over like residues, regardless of their order, and sequence permutation does not increase the number of charged residues or prolines which would be most likely to destabilize structures of this kind (Fig. 10). The configuration of strands and turns allows some variation without putting charged residues inside the core structure. We envision that structural variations of this kind offer a plausible explanation for the phenomenon of prion variants, as discussed in Section VIII. [Pg.157]

One method of achieving this same encoding is to modify the coefficients in Syj to have the same sorting permutation as those in Sx>r this can be computed efficiently. Essentially this involves solving the following problem Given an ordered sequence of integers A = (oi, 02,..., an), find another ordered sequence (ei, e2, - - -, en) such that... [Pg.15]

Of course, the number of permutations, which are required to bring a given operator string into a certain sequence, determines the sign of the expression Each interchange of two (particle-hole) creation or annihilation operators leads to an additional phase factor (—1) and, possibly, to a contraction of terms. For applications, therefore, it is reasonable to define a (so-called) normal-order sequence which specifies the relative position of the (particle-hole) creation or annihilation operators more precisely we write this sequence symbolically as... [Pg.190]

Where higher quality water is required, there is no single technology that can provide all the answers to impurity removal requirements. Consequently, it is common practice to employ two, three, or even more processes in sequence. In view of the different water sources, final quality requirements, and permutations of technologies and subsets, there is no universally agreed upon order in which the technologies are sequenced. Nevertheless, there are some purification processes that, because of specific technical or economic advantage, enjoy popular appeal and are commonly specified. [Pg.306]

A problem with the ANDREWS plot is that if variables of one object are permuted, a quite different picture arises because the amplitudes of the different harmonic oscillations change. It is, therefore, better if the functions are associated with principal components (see Section 5.4) of the set of features. Principal components are linear combinations of the features and explain the total variance of the data in descending order. In this manner the sequence of features, i.e. the sequence of the single principal components, should not be permuted in the ANDREWS plot. [Pg.150]

The molecular structure of phosphetane (6) was elucidated by X-ray crystallographic analysis, as discussed in Section II.89 The preferred isomer is (6-(l 4) (2 6)), which is shown in two space orientations in order to illustrate the application of the Permutational Notation. The ligand indices are prescribed by the Sequence Rules.75 The ligand and skeletal indices must coincide in (6-E), which thus gives the orientation of the skeleton. The permutation (1 4) (2 5) gives isomer (6 -(l 4) (2 5)) as a... [Pg.91]

A nearest-neighbour analysis was used to address the contribution of sequence context on O -methylguanine(m G) repair by the E. coli methyltransferases Ada or Ogt, with m G flanked by all permutations of G, A, T, or The Ada methyltransferase demonstrated strong 5 and 3 sequence-specific repair of m G in vivo. The Ada 5 preference decreased in the order Gm GN >Cm GN >... [Pg.470]

In order to open this route of access, as well, the compound index is augmented by successively permuted versions of all empirical formulas. Thus the number of appearances that an empirical formula makes in the compound index is equal to the number of elements it contains. As an example, C3H3AIO9, mentioned above, will appear as such and, at the appropriate positions in the alphanumeric sequence, as H3AIO9C3, AIO9C3H3 and 05C3H3A1. The asterisk identifies a permuted formula and allows the original formula to be reconstructed by shifting to the front the elements that follow the asterisk. [Pg.16]
