In order to keep the optimal gene from being destroyed, we improve the above crossover operator inspired by genetic algorithm. If the fitness of new crossover individuals X or Y is not worse than that of the original individuals V or V, then they replace the original individual V or V, otherwise the original individuals are reserved.

One should mention here the works of Wang who implemented a topology optimization procedure by genetic algorithm to developed a complex optimized surface relief (not a moth-eye structure), as a result claiming efficiencies up to three times over the Yablonovitch limit [195].

The evolutionary process of a genetic algorithm is accomplished by genetic operators which translate the evolutionary concepts of selection, recombination or crossover, and mutation into data processing to solve an optimization problem dynamically. Possible solutions to the problem are coded as so-called artificial chromosomes, which are changed and adapted throughout the optimization process until an optimrun solution is obtained. 

The descriptor set can then be reduced by eliminating candidates that show such bad characteristics. Optimization techniques such as genetic algorithms (see Section 9.7) are powerful means of automating this selection process.
