Optical Rotation Experiments

Experiments designed to look for optical rotation in heavy metal vapors began in 1974 at Seattle, Oxford, and Novosibirsk and improved experiments are continuing at all these places. A fourth experiment began a year later at Moscow. All four groups chose initially to look for optical [Pg.249]

Comparisons between theoretical predictions and experimental results are usually made in terms of the quantity R = Im( lpNc/A l) which is related to the rotation / pnc EQ- (26). Of great importance in the optical rotation experiments is the laser source. The laser must be tunable, and should be highly monochromatic, stable in intensity, and emit a beam of good optical quality. Tunable dye lasers satisfying all these criteria operated well at the 648-nm bismuth line in 1974 when work began in several places. The value of fractional distillation in the examination of essential oils cannot be overestimated. The various fractions may be examined and their specific gravities, optical rotations, and refractive indices determined. The combination of these figures will often give the experienced analyst the most useful information and save him many hours needless work. Chirooptical properties give more subtle information on the conformational behavior of biopolymers and peptides in solution.
